The SMBI does not raise a blip on the radar but deserves a lot more attention than it is getting. The population between the 2001 and 2006 Census changed by nearly 5% and 150 houses per year were built. Although the official statistics has the population at a bit more than 4000, the amount of ferry traffic has increased dramatically and the car parks on both the islands and at Weinam Creek the Gateway to the islands are overflowing. This does not necessarily signal a sudden burst of people moving to the islands but it does mean that the profile and requirements of the population are changing. According to the SEIFA index issued by the ABS(http://www.abs.gov.au/AUSSTATS/abs@.nsf/mediareleasesbyReleaseDate/87E66027D6856FD6CA257417001A550A?OpenDocument), Redland City enjoys the status of being the 5th most advantaged Local Government Area out of 157 in Queensland while the SMBI, obscured under the label "Redland (S) Bal", is rated as the 6th most disadvantaged Statistical Local Area out of 215 in Greater Brisbane. After 35 years of neglect since it became part of the Redland City Councl's responsibility, the Council triggered massive protests by releasing a plan that would charge everyone going to the Islands for parking at Weinam Creek. Close to 3000 signed petitions because the islanders were not engaged in the process. Two protest rallies gathered a thousand islanders into the two small halls on Macleay and Russell who then quizzed the Councillors for five hours on this and other practices that they saw as discriminatory. All major television channels carried the story nationally. A local report by me on the rallies can be seen on the BayJournal http://bayjournal.com.au/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1886&Itemid=1 As this is still working out, any text written will be ephemera.Leeshipley (talk) 00:57, 28 November 2008 (UTC)
These are NOT the Southern Moreton Bay Islands it seems
editAccording to the Queensland Government, the Southern Moreton Bay Islands are not Lamb Island etc as this article says, but are in fact gazetted as the uninhabited islands to the south of them [1] and are in Gold Coast City not Redland City. See here for a map of the official Southern Moreton Bay Island locality. So it seems that we need to either rename this article to something else (the quickest solution), or give each of Lamb Island etc their own article (they are all separately gazetted bounded localities, i.e. same status as suburbs). But either way, we need this article to refer to the other more southern islands within Gold Coast City? I welcome people's thoughts on what to do with the current article. 14:04, 11 April 2014 (UTC)
- This does need some attention. The four populated islands already have their own articles. Perhaps most of this article should be moved into an islands subsection in the geography section of Moreton Bay and if it is specific to a particular island into that island article. That would leave this article to cover the numerous islands further south. - Shiftchange (talk) 22:32, 11 April 2014 (UTC)
- I have renamed this article to be Southern Moreton Bay Islands (Redland City) as the first step. Kerry (talk) 04:31, 18 April 2014 (UTC)
