Naming

edit

Having lived in the area for 20 years and worked there I've never heard it called Southwark London Borough Council. Its always either been London Borough of Southwark or Southwark Council. Secretlondon (talk) 14:50, 10 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it's normally "Southwark Council" but in lawsuits we find "Southwark London Borough Council" (abbreviated to Southwark LBC) as the formal name, and it appears at various points in Southwark's own documents. It's similar naming to, say, Aberdeen City Council, Lincolnshire County Council, Bingley Town Council and Handforth Parish Council. We also see that naming in eg BBC reporting of election results.
The Borough is both an area and per London boroughs#Name and boundary changes a legal entity too, incorporated by charter, so we have two legal entities - council and borough. UK local government, eh?
On Wikipedia, Southwark London Borough Council maybe breaches WP:COMMONNAME but at least it's compatible with the 31 other Xxx London Borough Council articles, and all the YYYY Xxx London Borough Council election articles (eg 2010 Southwark London Borough Council election). They've been changed to match, I suspect. None of these are in the common name. Secretlondon (talk) 20:28, 13 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Focus

Remember this is an article about a council, not a borough. It should be focussed on the history of the council, not the borough for which we have a separate article. Wording should talk about the councils, not the boroughs/districts. MRSC (talk) 09:54, 11 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
