Calling Christopher Cross
editI know "sail" is the current term in the West, but was it a) at the time & b) in Russia/SU? TREKphiler hit me ♠ 03:20, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
Oh, yes?
edit"Complete lack of fire control systems contributed to rather mediocre fire efficiency." Just because there was no equivalent to the TDC or the RN "fruit machine", it doesn't mean there were no systems; before TDCs, USN routinely used a variety of slide rule (later 2 types). As unsub, uncited, & unlikely, I deleted. Also, fair to say the Mars-12 microphone system is a hydrophone setup? TREKphiler hit me ♠ 03:31, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, it basically was a hydrofone. But official Soviet term was "microphone system" -- during Soviet times Russian language was infused with officialese so heavily, that it cannot throw it away even now. As for fire control system -- you're right, slide rule it was (and, sonetimes, even just captain's intuition), but I'd not call them "fire control systems". Such crude methods required a superb crew training, but it was often lacking (there was a sub that once tried to submerge with its main hatch open, due to crewman error -- fortunately it was in port, so it was quickly rescued). If you compare sunk tonnages normalized per one sub, soviet subs most definitely weren't leaders. Also, there often was a problem with simply finding the target: Soviet optics was often substandard and periscopes limited visibility severely. When ASDICs were introduced later into the war, the situation improved markedly. --Khathi (talk) 01:59, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
- I can't say I'm surprised by any of that. Before the TDC (& Brit equiv), a lot of aiming was by eye. As for whether a slide rule qualifies as "fire control system", maybe not, strictly, but it's also not "complete lack", either, which was my point. You sound like you know your stuff, Khathi, so if you can source any of that, especially the exact nature of the gear used (even a slang name like "Is Was" or "fruit machine"), do add it, will you? "APA" acronym
editIn the section "Technical description" subsection "IX series", I am unable to disambiguate the acronym "APA". Would somebody please point its link to the exact Wiki article or spell out the acronym? Thanks.
