<!-- any way we can use "despite its obvious political agenda" in a neutral way? Also, calling the dances fun is a bit too much personal impression
Despite its obvious political agenda (to counterbalance the influence of Western culture), Soviet ballroom dances were fun. -->
- OK. No fun. How about the following replacement:
- <<Soviet ballroom dances is a relatively new creation. This dance category was introduced with the stated agenda to counterbalance the influence of Western culture (i.e., European ballroom dancing). Today the category is obsolete, but the dances themselves survived.>>
- It can be easily proved that there was an open political agenda indeed. It may be found in Russian popular dance books of these times. And the disputed statement is perfecly neutral: in the Soviet Union the notion of "political correctess" was exactly opposite to what it means e.g., in the USA today.
- What is more, I remember a series of TV programs whose purpose was to present "new" ballroom dances based on folk dances of various nations of the USSR.
