I object to this phrase being given a meaning that is more specific than its literal meaning. Surely one should be able to describe any kind of spatial data infrastructure as "spatial data infrastructure" not only spatial data infrastructure that has certain purposes and adopts certain design principles. The reason I am annoyed about this seemingly trivial semantic issue is that I have been developing various representations and mechanisms to provide infrastructure for spatial data but people have been telling me that I cannot call them as spatial data infrastructure because that is something different.
More generally I think that using Wikipedia to establish specialised meanings of particular phrases, which already have a clear general purpose meaning, should be discouraged. One can easily imagine circumstances where this practice could be used to mislead or distort our understanding. Sifonios (talk) 14:24, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
