Installing software

edit

From the article:

Spawning is also sometimes used in computer gaming in reference to installing a multiplayer-only version of a piece of software on a computer.

I have never heard this definition. Can someone verify that it is in use? --Mark Yen 00:57, 22 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

I play a lot of games, and I can say it's not used often, especially since many games today are bought and played solely for the multiplayer component. I remember very clearly that the Diablo installer offered the option to "Install Spawned Diablo". I lost that disc a long time ago, though, so I can't confirm that's what it actually does. StarCraft has the option as well.--Drat (Talk) 13:43, 10 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
As does Warcraft II: Battle.net Edition. It was a feature in early blizzard games, and a similar technique for allowing multiplayer with one copy was used in Command & Conquer. 130.111.84.225 06:47, 19 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
This is a completely different use of the term, though. Maybe it could be re-added at the bottom, but on a separate section, since it's unrelated, albeit it still applies to computer gaming. There's also this article, but it's also about something else (a function in Windows). Who is like God? (talk) 13:29, 18 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Merging/Cleanup

edit

Okay, at 'Camping (computer gaming)' there is a link 'spawn camping' that leads to here. And here there is a link with the same name ('spawn camping') pointing back to 'Camping (computer gaming)'. There also happens to be an article specifically called 'spawn camping.' Move, cleanup, merge, etc, is needed. I would argue this article should just be about Spawning and articles refering to spawn camping should not link to here.

Spawning

edit

And I allowed to saw spawning can be TERRIFYING... walking around, and then seeing a person appear in front of you, out of thin air?

I turn my head before an item or character will respawn.

Respawning -- Doom 3?

edit

I don't think there's any respawning in singleplayer Doom 3. The ones I know which support true monster respawning are Doom 1 and Doom 2, Nightmare! skill. Maybe if you're talking player respawning......

1st use

edit

Some fact checking may be required but, as far as I know, the first use of "respawn" was in Doom, with the -respawn command line parameter that made monsters return (incidentally the Doom developers also coined "deathmatch" in games). Who is like God? (talk) 13:22, 18 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

i believe also the 1st popular useage of the word in its current meaning came from Doom / ID software, i asked John Carmack on twitter but (understanably) got no reply @daddydidaw — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.69.226.123 (talk) 13:48, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

"Early games including monster respawning are Doom..."

edit

Surely there were plenty before Doom, even if they didn't use the term? Pentagram from 1986 had it, and I'm sure it wasn't remotely the first. 86.136.255.156 (talk) 23:56, 2 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:First-person (gaming) which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 19:01, 2 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
