Writer, Man Morrow lives in Speedway.

1820 or 1920?

edit

I'm not sure about this edit, but I've left it in for now. Could somebody look into this? I'm seriously no expert in history, especially in terms of cars or city development. --Sid 3050 15:26, 26 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Right you are, being that the Automobile was not successfully built until the 1890's and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was not built until 1909, the idea that this town was built around its nonexistent namesake, nearly 100 years before it existed, for people with automobiles, that would not yet be sold for another 70 years, is ludicrous. If it is one of the two years you mentioned it is undoubtedly 1920. --MJHankel 18:43, 13 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
not to mention the fact that the city flag and seal say 1926. --MJHankel 18:54, 13 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

--To clear up this question, Ralston laid out Indianapolis in the 1820s. Prior to its incorporation, Speedway was a part of Indianapolis. Ralston did not lay out the area that would become Speedway. Through the beginning of the twentieth century that area was rural farmland most likely, until Fisher, Allison, et al came along and began Speedway's development.

It seems very strange to say that in the mid-1920s a town laid out for automobiles, with garages instead of carriage houses, would have seemed "totally alien" to people in Indianapolis. In the early 1900s, Indianapolis's automobile industry rivaled Detroit's, and was home of the Stutz Bearcat, Deusenberg, Cord, Marmon, and dozens of others. By 1920, Indianapolis was a city of 300,000 people and a major manufacturing area. To suggest that its residents would have been surprised to see Speedway laid out for automobiles is odd, indeed.

I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.
