Theere is a great beat writer who also writes for ESPN on college sports for Louisville's Courier Journal -- Patr Forde

What is sports journalism about?

Doesn't this Wikipedia entry deserve to be more than just one short paragraph and a list of notable sports journalists? I think the sports journalism Redirect should be turned into an article about the practice of sports journalism, and turn this one into Sportswriers, since that is what this is. If you were rewriting the page, then I mearly averted a cut and paste page move. You were redirecting the page to a page that was a redirect to the previous page, so I moved it to the target page, and put back the text. Who is the sports internet journalist/ company (359Media or something) who does the goal alerts? I am hoping this will lead me to a sports journalist who I have forgot the name of, Wilkings or something (not Ray Wilkings). Any info will be greatly appreciated. Criticism

The introduction of this article says:

"the sports department within some newspapers has been mockingly called the toy department, because sports journalists do not concern themselves with the 'serious' topics covered by the news desk"

UK/US Bias?

There has been great movement in recent years around the world with sports journalism. In particular the sub-continent and Australia. Sportal web-service also deserves a mention. The fact they had the rights to club-sites and gave fans reports on games within minutes after a game has finished. In fact the internet may deserve a section here??

To add to this (two years later, I guess) I tried to add a section regarding sports blogs. Nothing major, hardly more than a cursory discussion of the topic, and had blogs compared to fanzines of the 70s and 80s. While fanzines caught on a great deal, sports blogs have greatly shifted the way American sports are covered. Nearly every major paper in America that covers one of the four major professional sports has their writers blogging now and blogs generate a giant amount of interest and traffic.

Not to mention, the article as currently written seemingly makes no distinction between British sports journalism and American (as well as the rest of the world)sports journalism, where it's treated far differently. Donegan17 (talk) 07:20, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

I'm resurrecting this discussion -- this article is criminally under-referenced as of this moment. I strongly suggest editors take a look at WP:AS, WP:TLDR, and WP:V to ensure that each sentence actually delivers good information. Aonus (talk) 06:05, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

History

Felt that this article did not discuss how sports journalism has evolved from its conception. I added two sections early history and 20th century developments that go over this.

Additional Information for the Future of Sport Journalism

Statcast (MLB)

The MLB introduced Statcast, a tracking technology that uses data to analyze. Statcast was first introduced in the MLB in 2014 during a trial run but was later installed in all ballparks the following year in 2015. Statcast can track the following categories: pitching it measures a players velocity, spin rate, direction and movement of the ball; for hitting it measures exit velocity, launch angle and batted ball distance; for running it measures sprint speed and base-to-base times; for fielding it measures arm strength, catch probability and catcher pop time. SportVU (NBA)

SportVU is a camera system that tracks data of the players, ball and referees. The company was founded in Israel in 2005 but was later acquired by STATS LLC in December of 2008. SportVU uses a 6-camera system set up in the rafters at each arena. Data is tracked at 25 times a second. SportVU can track all four quarters of data as well as energy spent throughout the game, alignment on the court, shot trajectory and the number of shots and dribbles by a player or whole team. Catapult (NFL)

Catapult is a sports performance analytics company. The company was founded in Melbourne, Australia in 2006. Catapult developed wearable technology that can track players movements, heart rate, and inertial sensors. As of 2023 Catapult has partnered with Energous Corporation to create the first smart football embedded with a tracker to collect precise data. By partnering with Energous Corp., Catapult is able to use the Radio Frequency technology to charge the tracker wirelessly without the need for setting it down to charge.
