Functional

edit

Shouldn't it be added somewhere that in sportswear, the most important aspect of the clothing is functional? (in hot weather staying cool, in cold weather staying warm, and definately not creating drag while swimming, running, riding or otherwise getting in the way.) Jon 01:47, 31 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Jockstrap

edit

Is this picture really neccessary? It came as a bit of a shock when the page loaded... Tombrabbin 23:41, 22 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Agree that it is not really suitable as the only picture in the article. What about a footballer or tennis player instead? Itsmejudith 13:02, 23 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Definitely the picture has to go.. cros13 02:22, 11 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Article name

edit

Just come back to this article. I can't quite believe that I started it and it has developed so well. It's really not anything I know about at all (the nearest I get to sport is hiking); I just started it because there was an obvious gap. I can understand the split between this article and Sportswear (fashion) but wonder if it wouldn't be even better to call this article Activewear, thus releasing Sportswear for fashion. It isn't a stub any more. Itsmejudith (talk) 19:48, 19 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

21st Century Activewear

edit

I'm removing this section. This page should be dedicated to describing the purpose and function of sportswear, not to high school level essays on likening sport to pornography. 78.128.199.109 (talk) 17:39, 8 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

While I won't be reverting your edits (I feel that student editor User:Jdearborn should have the chance to decide how to handle this appropriately, and learn from the experience) I will just comment on the sources, which I would not consider "high school level essays". The sources, despite being incorrectly formatted (which I tried to explain on the editor's talk page), appear to be valid sources such as a 2008 media report, an university thesis from the State University of New York (which would have had to undergo highly critical reviewing, assessment, and verification processes before being cleared), an essay from an scholarly journal, and two focussed articles from the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times. There is no problem with the sources in themselves. The problem is with the actual text of the addition, which did seem fixated on the idea of nudity, body image and sexuality, rather than actually dealing with sportswear, and appeared barely relevant to an article on activewear. However, because Jdearborn was doing this as a student editor, I felt it was fair to give them a chance to receive appropriate peer reviews and tutor's feedback before actually doing anything to their edits. Only women pictured?

edit

Currently the only people pictured in sportswear are female. It would seem illustrative (and less creepy) if there were men pictured as well? 109.156.67.12 (talk) 11:37, 28 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

This is a good point. I added some images of men, which also serve to illustrate different types / uses of clothing in other sports. --David Edgar (talk) 01:54, 19 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Self-evident stub. Top-importance because this is a major apparel category. Daniel Case 03:05, 28 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Requested move 22 May 2018

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

No consensus. Don't see general agreement to move this page with three supporters of Sportswear as primary topic, one specifically opposed to that title and one opposed to "any other move". As is usual with a no-consensus outcome, editors can strengthen their args and try again in a few months to garner consensus for a new title. Also please consider that suggesting a specific title is generally more successful than using a question mark as the suggested move. Have a Great Day and Happy Publishing! Sportswear (activewear) → ? – The article title does not use the appropriate parenthetical disambiguation per WP:DABRELATED. 2601:183:101:58D0:E02E:6B0B:CE85:A39C (talk) 19:23, 22 May 2018 (UTC) --Relisting. -- Dane talk 06:39, 31 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Oppose any other move. The lead begins, "Sportswear or activewear...", making the qualifier (activewear) entirely appropriate. Narky Blert (talk) 16:33, 28 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
How about moving the page to Activewear? It already redirects there. --2601:183:101:58D0:797F:2F90:EE05:5594 (talk) 17:14, 28 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Disambiguators are supposed to be clear. "Activewear" is far from clear, given I suspect most people would be unaware what the hell it meant. Maybe this is an ENGVAR issue, but even so, disambiguators need to be clear to everyone. As for being primary or not, I think in most countries "sportswear" primarily means "wear for sports", not "clothes that look a bit like wear for sports but aren't really"! Maybe this isn't the case in America, but I'm pretty sure it is elsewhere. The Sportswear (fashion) article even begins: "Sportswear is an American fashion term..." -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:39, 8 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
