I'd like to crop the photo – as it is now it's pretty useless – but am unfamiliar with the upload procedure at Commons regarding cropped images as they relate to the original. It's actually been done using this exact image to create File:Blossomland Bridge.jpg (@Chris857: That's yours; can you help?). Mapsax (talk) 15:10, 5 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Mapsax: Hi Mapsax. (It's been a while since I was highly active on here.) Do I assume correctly that you want to crop the lower left of the image to get the lighthouse(s)? It does not look there is a special upload form for this, so (apologies if you know any of this already, just want to be thorough):
At Release Rights, click "This file is not my own work."
For source and author, use "[[:File:St Joseph Michigan aerial view.jpg]] - originally from the US Army Corps of Engineers website: [http://web.archive.org/web/20041107093358/http://images.usace.army.mil/images/Hires/3998-70.Jpg Archived link]" and "US Army Corps of Engineers" to match my crop
For license, select "Another reason not mentioned above", and paste in {{PD-USGov-Military-Army-USACE}}
On the Describe page, give some description about the lighthouse
Put the date as "pre November 2004" (click on the pencil icon "Use custom date format")
Add it to some categories (Lighthouses in Michigan, perhaps)
Under "Add location and more information">"Other Information", put {{Extracted from|File:St Joseph Michigan aerial view.jpg}} (this is what points out what it has been cropped from)
Finish the upload
Change the file in the article to use the new one
Go to Commons:File:St_Joseph_Michigan_aerial_view.jpg, and under the tag about an extracted image ({{Image extracted|File:Blossomland Bridge.jpg}}), add another line about your new extracted image.
@Chris857: Thank you. I probably could have figured this out myself, but your details saved me what probably would have been frustrating time-consuming trial and error, especially regarding consistency with your crop. I assume that my slight enlargement of my crop from the original size doesn't need noting. Mapsax (talk) 14:10, 8 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
