Looks as if this page has become the subject of edit warring. Suggest editors discuss here before removing chunks of info. I do think there is a case for the removal of the information about one staff member, under WP:NOTNEWS, but I cannot see why other info such as exam results are being removed. Please try to assume good faith. Tacyarg (talk) 20:17, 22 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Wrong school!

edit

The reason for so much copy about Charlton House Independent School is not clear to me, given that the article's subject is the now-defunct St Mary's Independent School. Charlton House may have arisen, as it were, from the ashes of St Mary's, but at least nominally, it is a separate educational establishment.

There is currently a large section, three paragraphs long, with some sections of text taken straight from the website of the Charlton House Independent School. What made me suspicious was the phrase "benefits from being close to the heart of Southampton", given that the school is actually c. 3 miles from Bargate in the city centre (i.e. hardly "close to"). Moreover, the subsequent text reads like advertising copy, and needless to say there is no attempt to reference any reliable source.

I am not willing to engage in an edit war and so will not make the necessary changes myself. However, someone needs to syphon off the Charlton House section and create a new article for that school, preferably one conforming to the ethos of WP. Agreed that the Charlton House material is not relevant to this article and is a copyright violation. I have removed it and requested revision deletion. I have not created a new article for Charlton House, as my guess is it is not notable (primary school, and I think very new?). Another editor may do so of course if they can find coverage to show that the school passes WP:CORP or WP:GNG. (And what a horrible phrase on the website, "pupils benefit from the luxury of space in the current social climate").
I don't mean that no mention of CH would be appropriate in this article - a referenced statement that CH bought part of the land and a new school now exists there would be fine, as with Yarrow Heights. Tacyarg (talk) 22:49, 2 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Ofsted seems to regard Charlton House as the successor school to St Mary's rather than Yarrow Heights, as CH has the same URN and postal address as St Mary's. The inspection reports for CH carry on from St Mary's here: https://reports.ofsted.gov.uk/provider/27/116567

Additionally, the November 2020 Ofsted report writes about CH as though it is a continuation of the previous school, albeit with a new name and new staff. The connection to the RC Church remains.

Yarrow Heights, on the other hand, seems to have no connection to St Mary's apart from the acquisition of some of the old school's buildings. It has a different URN at Ofsted.

As to whether CH should have its own WP article - my inclination would be to say that pretty well any school is sufficiently notable to have its own article. However, reliable sources that mention the school, apart from Ofsted, seem to be very thin on the ground. I can find no mention of CH in the Echo. The most recent Ofsted report for CH, from December 2021, rates the school as Inadequate, just like its predecessor, with less than 30 pupils, so perhaps it is not sufficiently notable.

I'm not sure if any of this information gleaned from Ofsted can be meaningfully incorporated in the article in such a way that it is supported by reference to Ofsted reports.

Incidentally, I think we are both aware of alleged historical events at St Mary's, events that may have contributed to the school's collapse. However, I can find no mention on the internet of the outcome of the 2009 court case that arose from these events. Do you know what the outcome was?
