Jazz Samba album

edit

Quote from the article:-

The title track "Jazz Samba" was an adaptation of Antonio Carlos Jobim's composition "So Danço Samba".

The problem here is that there is no title track on that album.

First Jewish? Now Polish? What’s this irritation about? Is it a shame to be Jewish? And believe it or not – the origin of humans – t.i. ancestry, culture, education, self-conciousness (about the former three) and such – makes a character. And a character makes an artist. Even if WP prefers identical hominides....

"This is not a forum for general discussion" - then what's the point of this page? I wanted to improve the article but hey let's just stay in this silly limbo

Where was Getz/Gilberto recorded?

edit
"In 1964, Getz traveled to Brazil to work with João Gilberto, famed creator of bossa nova. While recording the influential album Getz/Gilberto, Gilberto introduced Getz to his wife, Astrud Gilberto, who sang two of the tracks on the album. After the album was recorded, Getz returned to the United States"

From reading this I'd come to the conclusion that Getz/Gilberto was recorded in Brazil in 1964. However, both Wikipedia article and disk liner state that this album was recorded March 18th & 19th, 1963 in New York City. getz's jewish heritage

edit

hi there, historian, not jewish, i find getz's jewish heritage relevant like amy winehouse's insofar as it is connected with historical jewish voices in uk and american jazz circles and as part of historical jewish prominence in entertainment and arts circles in early 1900s nyc "caucasian" america where jews were both legally "white" but also a kind of non-protestant subaltern group like italians and irish also often working class originally and also often intertwined with the scenes and circles of a British and American subaltern arts "underworld" underground where black jazz disco motown hip hop and the like developed, but yes maybe doesnt make sense as the first sentence, but ie class dimensions are relevant here in my opinion, Jobim in brazil likewise raised by his single mother then with step father took an interest in what was considered in brazil the african heritage music underworld of samba and the like despite nobility elite distaste for it 108.35.187.121 (talk) 05:51, 6 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Astrud controversy

edit

This sentence seems contradictory/ unclear.

"Getz and producer Creed Taylor claimed that the music's success was a result of their discovery of the talent of Astrud Gilberto, who had never before been recorded as a vocalist, shifting the spotlight away from her and depriving her of credit, when it had been her vocal rendition that had made the song a smashing success with the general public.". What shifted the spotlight away from her? 24.62.179.70 (talk) 10:36, 6 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Yes -- this caught my eye as well. If Getz and Taylor "claimed that the music's success was (due to) Astrud Gilberto", then that is shifting the spotlight onto her, not away from her. Also, the word "smashing" is inappropriate in an encyclopedia. Furthermore, the source cited for the passage about Astrud being exploited is an article in The Independent which is full of cant, such as "...a sorry tale of how a shy young woman was exploited, manipulated and left broken by a male-dominated music industry..." which is a curious claim, given the fact that her husband -- one of the most successful musicians in Brazil at the time, and who recorded the album with her -- certainly had some agency, if he thought his wife was being exploited. It's well-known that Getz had a terrible reputation as a human, but that does not justify the convoluted and catastrophizing claims made here about Astrud Gilberto. As no one has weighed-in to the contrary in the 6 months since the previous editor commented on this, I will boldly edit the passage to try to get it to make sense and be less subjective.
