Closure in 1980s etc.

edit

"Ultimately, the theater closed in the 1980s because of financial difficulties and the demands of long-deferred maintenance. Attempts to revive the theater over the next fifteen years have failed" - this is from (indeed, is a quote/near-quote of) promotional article found in program booklets of the State Theater, and more bothersomely is misleading; I gather, anyway, that some of the attempts failed, some succeeded but only briefly- if it is taken to imply that the theater remained closed from the late 1980s until 2001, that isn't the case (between mid-1991- personal experience can only give information from the date of my arrival in Ithaca, I suppose- and some point before 1993?- anyway, the theater was open and showing movies.) This section is indeed poorly worded and confusing. The State Theater was open from 1987-1991 as I attended several concerts there. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Parkerjh (talkcontribs) 03:34, 17 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

A good source for the 1980s might be the Cornell Daily Sun archives, some of which are online. In 1985 the State showed the film "Commando" (Cornell Daily Sun 6 November 1985, page 7) and in March 1986 Kris Kristofferson played a concert there (Daily Sun, 7 March 1986 p. 11), and the Roches played May 1 1986 (18 April 1986 p. 10). In April 1986 the State showed the film "Trip to Bountiful" (25 April 1986 p. 10). So it seems the theatre played both concerts and films in 1986. Probably deserves some more research, maybe there is a more comprehensive article in the Sun archives. - Kzirkel (talk) 22:12, 17 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
