I propose moving this page to Statue of Mahatma Gandhi (Houston). @Ham II, Johnbod, and Randy Kryn: Thoughts? ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:56, 2 July 2019 (UTC)
- I agree with the proposal, and I think the same should be done with the statues of Gandhi in Milwaukee, New York, San Francisco and Washington at Category:Statues of Mahatma Gandhi. Ham II (talk) 19:01, 2 July 2019 (UTC)
- Mahatma Gandhi (Houston statue) better because it keeps the real name of the sculpture. My take on it, everything else being equal, is that real names should be prioritize in titling. I think I'm in a minority on this, but don't understand why. Randy Kryn (talk) 19:08, 2 July 2019 (UTC)
- There do seem to be very different schools of thought here. I take it that for you the main evidence for the "real title" is the inscription on the work itself, i.e. MAHATMA GANDHI in this case, rather than how sources refer to the work (i.e. usually not Mahatma Gandhi in italics)? Could the rule be to have titles which match the inscriptions but are disambiguated enough to be identifiable: Mahatma Gandhi (Houston statue), Mahatma Gandhi (Milwaukee statue), Mohandas K. Gandhi (New York statue), Mohandas K. Gandhi (San Francisco statue) and Mahatma Gandhi (Washington, D.C. statue)? Ham II (talk) 20:10, 2 July 2019 (UTC)
- Ham II, Wondering if Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Visual_arts#Works_of_art helps any. ---Another Believer (Talk) 20:17, 2 July 2019 (UTC)
- Having written most of it, it doesn't deal very specifically with "statue of..." situations. Johnbod (talk) 21:12, 2 July 2019 (UTC)

- Support disam certainly needed here, & it looks as if this will be consistent with SanFran, & others. Johnbod (talk) 21:12, 2 July 2019 (UTC)
Note: I'm going to go ahead and archive this discussion in an attempt to centralize discussion here: Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style/Visual_arts#Naming_conventions_for_public_statues. Please start a new discussion for one specific to this statue. ---Another Believer (Talk) 01:36, 21 July 2019 (UTC)

Mahatma Gandhi (sculpture) → Statue of Mahatma Gandhi (Houston) – For consistency with other "Statue of XXX" articles, disambiguated by location. See related discussion above and at Talk:Mohandas K. Gandhi (sculpture, San Francisco). --Another Believer (Talk) 21:15, 2 July 2019 (UTC)

- Support. It's a statue. Say it's a statue. We've had this debate before. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:19, 4 July 2019 (UTC)
- Support per nomination and would also support the form with a comma — Statue of Mahatma Gandhi, Houston — as analogous to other main title headers that use a comma, rather than parentheses — Statue of Mahatma Gandhi, Johannesburg; Statue of Mahatma Gandhi, Parliament Square or Statue of Mahatma Gandhi, Gandhi Maidan. —Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 03:27, 6 July 2019 (UTC)
