Problems
editThe athletics section is full of opinionated statements. It would be helpful to find citations for the stats so it looks more reliable. → p00rleno (lvl 86) ←ROCKSCRS 17:14, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
- Additional sources have been added where appropriate. Supportable statements have had requests placed for sources, and unsupportable statements have been removed. Alansohn 17:28, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
Logo
editThe logo used for Steinert, The Spartan, is identical to the one used by Michigan State University. I added it to the Infobox under fair-use. Gamweb (talk) 03:26, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
- As you can see, it has been removed. It is fair use on a Michigan State related article, as they own the copyright. It is not a fair use for this. Gtwfan52 (talk) 04:40, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- Replaced with a different logo, taken directly from the Steinert High School web site. There is a slight difference in the one I selected (The eye of the Spartan is colored in grey color). Gamweb (talk) 09:51, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- As you can see, another editor removed that. I really would suggest you drop this, before you end up yanking your alma mater into a copyright suit. Up to you though. As I told you, I am not a lawyer, nor do I play one on TV. Gtwfan52 (talk) 17:57, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

- IP's edits are just as valid as anyone else's. He explained his rationale quite well, and in my opinion he was spot on. That means that two editors don't want it here and you do. Sorry. And as I said, feel free to take me to WP:SPI if you feel your allegations are correct. If not, a polite person would apologize. Happy editing! Gtwfan52 (talk) 21:09, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- It appears you have been exonerated, and I apologize. Gamweb (talk) 21:30, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- How can I attract an anonymous I.P. user over here for a discussion? Gamweb (talk) 21:31, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

I have added a street-view image which should have no controversy. Perhaps we can solve the logo issue later. Gamweb (talk) 23:41, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- The Steinert Football Team uses a large white letter "S" on a green colored helmet instead of a full logo. Would there be any objection to using such a letter S in the logo section of this page? I should be able to upload it Commons, since a simple letter S does not have enough unique information to be copyrighted. Gamweb (talk) 00:13, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
- go for it. Gtwfan52 (talk) 00:23, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
- Made one myself with Paintshop Pro software. Uploaded it to Commons with a PD License. Short of having an actual photo of a football helmet, this looks close enough. Gamweb (talk) 00:53, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

Made a new one with a block letter S, more accurate representation of the letter on a football helmet. Gamweb (talk) 19:16, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
copyright issues
editThe three photos in the gallery section are obviously professional photos. The upload rationale was that the uploader owned the copyright. Could you be confusing the fact that you own a copy of the photo with owning the copyright? The photographer owns the copyright. You did not buy reuse rights when you bought the photo. Posed professionally and with captioning added in processing, combined with an origin in the late seventies to early eighties, says professional photo in no uncertain terms. I am removing them and will nominate them for deletion on commons. Gtwfan52 (talk) 08:25, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
Teahouse Discussion (transferred)
editI am having numerous copyright issues with the logo used by Steinert High School. I am an Alumni of the school, so I would like to find a viable solution. The logo used is identical to the Michigan State University logo, The Spartan. I doubt that MSU would sue a high school over its usage, but its use has been objected to on Wikipedia. I found a few alternatives that might be used.
- A cloth patch which is sold in the Steinert school store (this is my own Flickr account, using it to demonstrate) Spartan cloth patch which was commissioned by the school and is obviously different from the MSU logo.
- Another logo was designed by one of my classmates, which is obviously different from the MSU logo. She sells it on t-shirts and so forth. She owns the copyright, but I could use it on Wikipedia under Fair Use. Steinert Spartans Alumni Although it is not the "official" school logo, I can certainly identify it as used by Alumni (not in the Infobox, but in the Alumni section perhaps). Opinions? Are either of these viable to use on the school page? Gamweb (talk) 09:56, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
- Gamweb, welcome to the Teahouse. An interesting situation this one and I'm not totally sure of the answer. The logo you added was deleted with the edit summary Not fair use. The Image is a trademark of Michigan State University. Just because it is being used improperly on another website does not make it appropriate here. I suppose the first thing to do is to understand the way the image is used by the school. It may well be a trademarked logo of MSU but that doesn't mean to say that it's use by Steinert High School is wrong as they may well hold a licence from MSU to use it. I would start by asking the school what the situation is, if they are using a trademarked logo without permission then that is their problem and here the mistake should not be repeated. If however they have an agreement with MSU, or can demonstrate that the school log is not identical then you can reinstate the fair use you had. If there isn't a valid reason for using it, to be honest I just wouldn't bother having a logo in the infobox. The use of images, especially non-free ones, is about adding value and understanding to the article. Alumni logos don't, in my opinion, do this so aren't worth adding. Sorry I can't give you a definitive answer. NtheP (talk) 22:53, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
- One approach would be to arbitrarily decide that the cloth patch logo is, in fact, the official logo of the high school (since it's commissioned by them, perfect logic, yes yes yes), and therefore is eligible to be used in the WP article about the school under fair use. And ignore the, umm, other logo. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 20:30, 16 November 2012 (UTC)
- The cloth patch image at Flickr (Spartan cloth patch) is licensed (apparently by you) on under Creative Commons 2.0, so technically it should be okay to use on Wikipedia, provided that copyright for the patch isn't held by any entity. There are also fair use guidelines that may come into play, in which even if the patch is copyrighted, it may still be usable on Wikipedia, provided it is used per the guidelines at Wikipedia:Non-free content. Hopefully this helps to address your query. Northamerica1000(talk) 19:04, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
Steinert High School, Michigan State University work out deal to use Spartans logo
editLive article I was just made aware of. Can the Spartan logo be used on the Steinert page now, without further objection? Gamweb (talk) 20:56, 30 November 2014 (UTC)
- Wow, talk about a causal loop, but let me first emphasize that I detest images and all the issues related to their use. When I was about to come here in response to the message, I was sure that my response would be that the Michigan State University Sparts logo could only be used on a fair use basis on articles related to the school and its sports teams. Of course the logo couldn't be used here in the Steinert High School page, because the logo belongs to MSU, not Steinert. I had never seen the nj.com article linked above, but if the deal was reached then Steinert would indeed have permission to use the MSU Spartans logo. The only problem is that I am utterly uncertain if the permission extends only to the school itself using the MSU Spartans logo on its football helmets and the like or if it would allow the MSU logo to be used in the Wikipedia article for Steinert. I don't know the answer to that question. This is a copyright fair use issue that needs to be raised with the Wikipedia image folks. Getting an official copy of the authorization letter from MSU to Steinert sent to OTRS might be an appropriate way to show that there is indeed authority here.
