Stellar Blade and the Male Gaze

edit

There have been a number of really good articles surrounding the issue of Stellar Blade's use of the Male Gaze, as well as how the game was turned into a hot button topic by certain culture war creeps on the internet. Inverse covered the issue, as did the Mary Sue. Should wikipedia provide a brief summary of the situation? It is after all one of the more noteworthy things about the game. 46.97.170.182 (talk) 10:33, 23 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Added this in. I never read the inverse article though, so I didn't cite it as a source. 135.131.133.122 (talk) 00:42, 26 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Eve (Stellar Blade) has some references covering things from both points of view, but I would make sure to have them focus on the game itself if you use them.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 00:48, 26 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
It's frankly an opinion and irrelevant to information about the game itself. I would encourage you to add that under a "Male Gaze" article or something and keep the game article unbiased and factual. 2001:240:2AD4:3100:215A:5F47:C1B6:A383 (talk) 15:22, 2 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

I think that, if Wikipedia is going to include the partisan Male Gaze left wing backlash to the article, to keep it fair and balanced, it should also include Sony's censorship of the game (despite the developers wishes) to cater to that partisan demands, the backlash by customers against said censorship, and the support Stellar Blade has from the center and right side of the spectrum who believe the complaints about the Male Gaze and the demands for censorship are political in nature, all of which have been covered in just as many news outlets including Bounding Into Comics 2601:246:5A83:D090:D013:9F07:1502:5B9F (talk) 23:25, 26 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Bounding isn't a reliable source for plenty good reason, but I do agree it should include both once it's covered in reliable sources.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 23:58, 26 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
How is The Mary Sue a “reliable source” in a way that “bounding into comics” is not? 73.138.18.192 (talk) 11:16, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Maybe because Bounding keeps hard veering articles into rants built around homophobia? If you feel it's been unfairly weighed there, you can bring it up on WT:VG/S, the project's source analysis page. But it's definitely not a discussion for here.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 13:41, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
A source's reliability is determined by a number of objective factors, and Bounding fails all of those. It is a rumour mill that persistently peddles proven lies and conspiracy theories that have been debunked by independent fact checkers. It also has ties to Arkhaven. A publishing company owned by a avowed white supremacists and neonazi Vox Day. 46.97.170.182 (talk) 08:16, 29 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I agree with this. The game was censored and I also feel like the current article is taking a one sided stance against the game which is weird. Multiple outlets have covered this, including https://gamerant.com/stellar-blade-update-racist-language-removal/. At the end of the day, freedom of games and expression should be encouraged...and not attacked. Creator Of Worlds 2000 (talk) 02:05, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Leftists? It has controversies. Why wouldn't they be included? They are notable and have several sources talking about it. Not to mention the greater gaming community as a whole. You may have an opinion one way or another, but that doesn't mean we need to be hiding the active discourse surrounding the game. 135.131.133.122 (talk) 03:32, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

I don't think there has to be a left vs. right debate here, it is not the right place. In case you want to include something, just add sources here and someone will work on it. Or, do it yourself, of course. I recommend to check the source list (WP:VG/S) for green / reliable sources to make sure that content also stays in the article and does not get sorted out in the future. The search engine that uses reliable sources is also a great way to do that. Vestigium Leonis (talk) 10:17, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

WP:NOTAFORUM. Discuss improving the article, not its content.
Unfortunately, it has become a left vs right issue because right wing culture warriors have moved every stone to make sure it becomes one. Hilariously, they were the game's most vocal supporters, until a couple of days ago, when they began throwing a hissy-fit over a few cosmetic changes to the game that toned down some of the overt sexualization. 46.97.170.182 (talk) 08:19, 29 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
The "controversy" didn't exist until leftists threw a fit over this game's existence and began yet another crusade. Exhibit A: This entire talk section. 216.71.37.48 (talk) 00:38, 1 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
I agree. The Leftists hypocrisy was what lead to this incident to begin in the first place. It's ironic, if not down right pathetic, that they would insist the entire world would be swinging to their perspective. If that was the case, there wouldn't have been 65,000 Petitions demanding Sony to reverse on their censorship of the game. 2600:1012:B1C0:7DB9:35C2:2215:D784:65F4 (talk) 09:13, 1 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Coverage of controversial aspects

edit

As the game has some controversial aspects that might be fitting for coverage in the release section, please join the discussion here.

There seems to be an issue with the content of the two Italian sources. In case the IPs want to discuss, let me know. I extracted the part about double standards by the article's author, but he never said anything about puritanism. In case my translation is wrong, please point out the exact sentence where you get the claim from. Also the part where Kim is apparently talking about puritanism and double standards is, from my perspective, not covered in the author's writing. I don't think we need a "release" section like Films choose to organize it because, for whatever reason, they separate initial release reviews from home media. In video games, its usually divided into pre-release and post-release. All reception is reactionary to the game's release as well. So any "controversies" should be in the Reception section. I don't think we should be calling it a controversy and just a common topic that is discussed. Look at Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain's Quiet.Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 16:59, 2 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, seems fine to me. I would rename it into "Appearance of Eve" or similar to keep it neutral. I would probably delete or move the part about adult rating, as it was not really discussed that much and does not fit into the rest of the text. Vestigium Leonis (talk) 19:16, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
I will point out that while it's a big part of this subject, a lot of the discussion is more over at the other article. What I'd probably focus on, to get this to at least C, is critiques on the game's story and gameplay. Then you can play up the sexy angle, but avoid giving it undue weight.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 00:40, 4 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
By judging the Eve article, a short summary with a link to the article or its reception section might be sufficient here? Vestigium Leonis (talk) 09:45, 4 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
I feel that'll do the trick, yeah.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 18:33, 4 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Kim Hyung-tae or Hyung-tae Kim?

edit

I'm not familiar with Korean naming standards here, but I do know that a lot of media outlets such as IGN have it as Hyung-tae Kim, while the redirect here uses the opposite. Should we switch it to match what's used in western media? Kung Fu Man (talk) 18:28, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

I am not sure, but his [1] PS blog entrys are credited to himself as Kim Hyung Tae. Also, if this is his official Twitter account, he also uses Kim Hyung Tae. [2]https://twitter.com/jamm3rd Vestigium Leonis (talk) 20:59, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Review Scores

edit

A few notable publications with wiki pages are missing in the roundup. Famitsu for example gave a 35/40. The game´s page and also Eve´s frankly focus so much on the culture war debate that an examination of the game itself has become secondary. And I say that as someone who agrees with the criticism. There are no good sources for the sales figures so far either but that too needs to be covered once those emerge.
