The Crocodile Hunter

Shouldn't his intro mention that was most known as the Crocodile Hunter? Maybe like this:

Stephen Robert Irwin (22 February, 19624 September, 2006) commonly known as The Crocodile Hunter was an Australian naturalist.....

Coasttocoast 04:19, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

That seems like a good idea. dposse 04:31, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
Yep I think that's an excellent idea. --Woohookitty(meow) 06:20, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
I made an edit to something like that directly after his death, but someone reverted it. Someone stole my credit! YARRR!!! Shamrox 17:15, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Archive Box

Hey, I've been trying to fix the format error with the location of the box with the talk page archives, but am not very good with that kind of thing yet. Just thought I'd bring it to your attention so a more experienced person can do it. When it's fixed, would you mind sticking a thing on my talk page showing what you did? Thanks.--Erciesielski 04:52, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Backslashes

Is this something to do with the way the whole page has had backslashes inserted everywhere? Nasty! Leeborkman 04:59, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
No, it's a user using an open proxy. Can one of the admins here please look at [1]. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 05:03, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
I was in the process of reverting that vandalism when the question arose. —David Levy 05:05, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
The user needs to be blocked. Any edits they make will insert backslashes and open proxies are banned for logged in users and IPs. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 05:11, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Conventionality

Is the word or the phrasing of uncoventional (at the beginning of the article) either point of view or neutrel point of view ?
www.geocities.com/berniethomas68 05:22, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

I do not see anything wrong with it in terms of neutrality. IMO, the style he used where he got up close and personal with animals, so to speak, is unconventional for documentary style which is usually voice-over stuff. Ansell 05:27, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Legacy

Should we start a section on the legacy that he leaves behind? I have been reading a lot of news items about what Steve has left behind, in terms of conservation, effect on Australia, and so on. I think if we can avoid getting repetitive, we could develop this section after the death section. Obviously a lot more is to be known about what legacy he leaves behind, so maybe if not now, it should be developed later. Thanks.

This may be too small a thing to worth mentioning, but someone decided to put the turtle emoticon in their msn display name as a thing of respect to Steve and it spread a lot. Almost all my contacts (around 100) now have the turtle.

6/73 for me. 81.104.102.54 07:49, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

I also have the turtle in my msn name. It's a neat little thing that might be added somewhere, but I'm not sure where it would be in context.

Political leanings

If you're going to make mention of Irwin's politics, then make it accurate. I added a quote he gave to the ABC declaring that he was not a diehard fan of the Liberal party, and this was promptly removed without explanation, with the incorrect information retained. Why?—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Michaeles (talkcontribs) .

I reverted it because it was not referenced. Ansell 06:49, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
You should possibly also find a way to integrate [2] into your statement next time. It seems a Reliable source to me. Ansell 06:51, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Alright I'll reference it. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Michaeles (talkcontribs) .

You do really need to add in the other information to keep to the NPOV policy. Ansell 06:53, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Well I did originally, but you deleted it because it wasnt referenced. --Michaeles

From my view, you reversed the entire bias of the paragraph. What I was suggesting was that you integrate both points of view, ie, that he was a supporter in some eyes, and that in others he was not a supporter. Ansell 07:05, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Wrong date in introduction

On September 6th, 2006, he was filming documentary footage, when a stingray that he swam too close to extended its barb into his chest, killing him.

... that would be September 4th.

Fixed. Ansell 06:50, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Naturalist only?

Surely his extensive career creating documentaries has to be considered as one of his "occupations" - he wouldn't be known by 1/100th of the people he is today if it wasn't for his documentaries, and that is what he'll be remembered for primarily - just look at the lead sentence:

I would fix it, but felt that a discussion would be best considering the high activity. Daniel.Bryant 07:17, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

What is the change you are wanting exactly? Ansell 07:25, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
In the template to the right-hand side, add Television personality to the already-listed naturalist. Daniel.Bryant 07:27, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
Seems okay to me. Although to put the current position into play, I think it is the way it is due to people recognising that he did the TV stuff in order to gain attention to animals. Ansell 07:31, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
Thanks. Daniel.Bryant 07:46, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

TV Specials

How many TV specials are we going to let enter the article. One was removed recently, however, it is very similar to the remaining ones. Ansell 07:25, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Belongs in "Category:Australian naturalists"

Someone please put him in this category; I cannot because I'm an Anon user. Thanks. --172.145.151.96 07:48, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Also, "Category:Australian environmentalists" seems appropriate as well. --172.145.151.96 07:50, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
Done. Ansell 08:12, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Wrong date in footnotes

The following footnote references have the wrong date (6th September), which is tomorrow. In fact they should be today's (5th September). As of today and now (5th September, 5:48pm AEST) these are references 21 and 30.

1/ Patrick Barkham. "It's like a part of Australia has died", Guardian Unlimited, 2006-09-06. Retrieved on 2006-09-06.

2/ Dave Donaghy. "Irwin death footage 'shocking'", News.com.au, 2006-09-06. Retrieved on 2006-06-06

It would help if these are corrected by authorised editors.

Cheers!

Fixed! It was actually my fault originally... :) Ansell 08:05, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Donot forget that when it's today in the United States it may be tomorrow in Australia. They're 14-16 hours ahead of EST, and 17-19 ahead of PT.. -24.92.41.95 12:12, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Also, some of the footnotes say 'retrieved on 2006-6-5' which is in june. someone fix this: we can't retrieve info before it is released.

Cropped photo

Why exactly was his photo cropped? I don't see the benefit. Before, and after. —msikma <user_talk:msikma> 08:09, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

I prefer the cropped version myself as a single photo of him. The other version is appropriate in certain places I guess but the cropped version is being used as the main photo, and someone thought it was nice like that. Ansell 08:12, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
Perhaps we should fork the image, keeping one cropped and the other one as full image. —msikma <user_talk:msikma> 12:08, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Emotive Language?

The last Crocodile Hunter documentary went for three emotional hours with footage of Irwin's across-the-world adventures? Give me a break! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 202.173.191.116 (talkcontribs) 08:47, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Good Article nomination

I come to the article, and I realize this is a damn good article. And it doesn't look like it got there in the very short time since Steve died. I personally think it could pass FA muster, but considering the to-do list, I have put it up for GA nomination instead. --Kitch 11:42, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

It may be a bit early. From Wikipedia:What is a good article?, a good article is "stable, i.e. it does not change significantly from day to day and is not the subject of ongoing edit wars.". This article is changing rapidly and I wouldn't consider it stable just yet. -- Longhair 11:55, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
I would wait at least a month before even considering this article. It still does, in my opinion, need a few copyedits. Yanksox 12:10, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
I removed the GA nom. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 13:30, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

The lead section contradicts other parts

The lead section has "He was also owner and operator of Australia Zoo, in Beerwah, Queensland, which was established by his wife along with his long time friend William Rollo." (my italics) It seems unlikely that his wife established the zoo, given section 2.1 "Rise to fame" states "He took over the running of the park, now called Australia Zoo, and in 1992 met (at the park) and married Terri Baines." Can someone who knows about the running of the zoo (ie not me) fix that paragraph? Australia Zoo doesn't mention Rollo, and I can't get through to the zoo's home page ATM . Mr Stephen 11:56, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Wait a minute, the article on Rollo didn't mention Irwin until after Irwin's death. I'll strip him out. Mr Stephen 12:01, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
The part about establishing it with his wife and friend, is false. His parents took over the zoo when he was a child, and he took control of it from them in 1991 i think it was. Ansell 12:04, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
But didn't they move the zoo from somewhere, to where it now is? --12:52, 5 September 2006 (UTC) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Addicted (talkcontribs) .
I wish the actual site would load :(... But this is a Google cache of one statement on the Zoo site which has a reference to Steve's parents founding the zoo in 1970, which contradicts what I said above as well. It doesn't say anything about movement though. [3] Ansell 13:02, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
After considering the matter, I've put William Rollo up at AfD, see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/William Rollo. It looks like a hoax to me. Mr Stephen 14:01, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
It seems I mixed things up. According to abc.net.au (or here or here (search)) in 2003 there where considerations to move the Zoo to Brisbane (Boondal), but they obviously wheren't (yet) realized. --Addicted 14:05, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

He could have established it 'australia zoo' as it was different before. Grim

SMH: Croc Hunter new consumes web

From [4]: On Wikipedia, "Steve Irwin" and "stingray" are the top two topic-specific search terms. Hm, how do they know?! I didn't even know information like that was available about WP. pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:43, 5 September 2006 (UTC) (BTW please don't add this to the article. Just musing. pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:48, 5 September 2006 (UTC))

Maybe they extrapolated based on the insanely high edit counts for the two articles. That isn't actually accurate though. Ansell 12:51, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
Or they looked at the wikicharts Top 50 announced last month? This talk page is #44 on the list also. --Richmeister 13:42, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Video

Is this video likely to be released, either by his film crew or family or the police, or is it likely to be destroyed/given to his family etc? Interesting because of qutoes he has made, maybe put a mention about this in the article?

A news source stated this morning that police have looked at the video and the family are considering releasing it to the public at the moment. --Tim1988 talk 13:40, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
I think that deserves a mention in the article. HenvY 13:52, 5 September 2006 (UTC)HenvY

Similarities to the death of Sir Peter Blake

Being in NZ at the time of the death of Sir Peter Blake, and being in Oz at the time of Steve Irwin's death, I couldn't help but notice some similarities between the two death. Both deaths gripped their respective nations, while the men who died where both doing envoiromental reseach (or something along those lines). Comments?--HamedogTalk|@ 13:40, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
