POV?

With all due respect to the dead subject, I am a little uncomfortable with the statement "Irwin's personality and outrageous antics in the series made him an international celebrity". While he certainly was a great guy, that doesn't really sound very neutral to me, sounds more like a point of view/opinion. Thoughts?--Badharlick 10:21, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

It's not POV, its true. The only Australian Americans know is Steve Irwin. He's an internation superstar. Personally, I think you're an asshole. Also, put your new comments at the BOTTOM of the god damn page.142.176.114.226 03:22, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Are two links to about the same story really needed, esp. as DeadBrain is not a large news source? ~ Mlk 06:58, 7 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Agreed. I shall remove these news links and provide just one, to an Australian media outlet. - Mark 10:18, 7 Jan 2004 (UTC)

reptile handling

I was wondering if I should add something to the page about the controversies surrounding his reptile handling that arrise among those who actually know what they're doing. Should this be on this page or the one for the show? Mokele 8:10, 28th of sept 2004

FedEx advertisement

I was going to add this to the article but the vandalism lock prevents me from doing so. Any chance someone could add it in when the article is unlocked? --M.Neko 05:07, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

  • Steve Irwin appeared in a disturbingly ironic commercial for FedEx, where he was struck by a venomous snake. He waited in vain for an antitoxin sent by a rival delivery service, only to expire well before the antidote actually arrived.
If you wrote about the various commercials Irwin stared in, fine, but I don't see the point of drawing parallels between a commercial and the way he died – beyond it being a 'fun fact'. I'm sure you didn't mean anything negative with that statement, but I think it comes of as bad taste.--Anss123 05:25, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
Agreed.

Steve Irwin's Great Escapes

What happened to the show "Steve Irwin's Great Escapes" on the travel channel? Imdb, wikipedia even travel channel has no mention of this show. Only place I can really find it is tvguide.com Any ideas?—Preceding unsigned comment added by Xoom (talkcontribs) 23:59, August 18, 2006

Jungle Girl

Just in case anyone is wondering, Jungle Girl will be the name of Bindi Irwin's series. I just auditioned for a part in it today. Shooting for the pilot will start in early October, and it should be released in America by Late November. And yes, I was auditioning for a part as one of the singers. Scalene 07:57, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

Have they done any publicity on the show yet? I couldn't find it on IMDB or on a general Google search. —C.Fred (talk) 13:22, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
Not yet - but, I can confirm that the show is definitly going to be called Jungle Girl. It said so on the script - and they only just had auditions, so publicity is a long way off... Scalene 07:08, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Qualifications

Does anyone know if Steve actually has any qualifications (or even honourary ones?). Its always puzzled me and my biologist pals.--ZayZayEM 12:22, 21 Oct 2004 (UTC)

None, officially. He mucks around with stuff and hasn't gotten killed yet is all. [Update: He has. -- 82.131.185.18 09:53, 4 September 2006 (UTC)] In fact, he mucks around in a way dangerous both to him (like I care) and the animals themselves. No venomous handler in their right mind would do any of the crap he does, and he refuses to tranq the crocs once they're on land, a ridiculous showmanship stunt that puts their lives in danger. --Mokele
AFAIK, He doesn't have any academic qualifications. On the other hand, he has a great deal of hands-on experience (especially as compared with some academicians.) - 27 december 2005

He was awarded an honourary PhD in herpetology 2 years ago as I recall. I have worked with him (I'm a mathematical biologist (or biological mathematician if you like)), and he was incredibly well informed and he was up to date with most of the current research. I got the impression that his wife is qualified and makes sure he's in touch with trends in research. Johnpf 07:04, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Antarctic "controversy" needs an update

Steve Irwin was cleared of charges relating to his Antarctic adventure, so the page needs an update. Sorry, I'm a new user and I don't have the confidence to do it just yet.

Heres a link to a related BBC News story on the cleared charges: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/3896685.stm

Good Reference. I'll put it in for you, but you should try it yourself sometime. It's easy. Johnwhunt 16:55, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I thought he was dead. Must have been a rumor.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Loool (talkcontribs) 17:37, September 13, 2005

Well, he is now.
  • I clicked the [edit] for the "So he's dead.." section, and it puts me into this (External Links) section instead. Not sure what's going on. But anyway, I must point out that the Steve_Irwin article mentions he was killed by a Manta ray, but the linked Manta_ray article states that the Manta, unlike the stingray, has no stinger. This is an inconsistency which maybe should be corrected. I don't know the correction to make, so I wanted to bring it to someone's attention. (This is my first discussion post, please forgive me if I didn't follow protocol) -Weasel5i2

Fan forums

Does anybody here visit either of the fan forums that keep showing up in the links? One of them is actually a Terri Irwin site; I don't think it should be up at all. Is there any redeeming quality in the others, or should they be deleted as well? —C.Fred 04:25, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Trivia

Russell Coight is a parody of a number of well known Australian documentary shows. I don't think the comment that it is an "obvious parody of the Crocodile Hunter" is correct. It is much closer to shows such as the Leyland Brothers than Crocodile Hunter, though it parodies the genre as a whole not any one specific show as described in its own wikipedia article.Rikware 04:14, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

I've always thought Coight based more on Malcom Douglas than Irwin. But "poeple doing silly things in Australia" is a genra that predates television!. Robbak 05:20, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Queensland PS release and rumors

The Queensland Police Service media release document (JPEG format), linked to on the page, which apparently confirms Mr. Irwin's time of death seems to be a rather blatant screenshot of a rough Microsoft Word document, underlines for misspellings and all. It also includes some gaffes in writing, including missing words or bad phrasing. All in all, it seems like a faked serious-information style and doesn't seem to be reliable enough as a Wikipedia source.

At the same time, I've heard differing accounts including that Irwin did in fact die a week ago and that the news was just released to the general public at this time. However, I have no confirmation for this, and none of the news accounts I've seen support it, so it's easy enough to consign to the rumor bin. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Vintagejonny (talkcontribs) 06:20, 4 September 2006.

Death

WikiFirst?

On a news report I heard something about his wife possibly not yet knowing of his death, with her apparently being in a remote part of Tasmania. If so, would this be the first case of someone's death popping up on Wiki before the person's spouse recieved the news? Morbid on this sad occasion I know, but the question is of interest.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Ca7ch (talkcontribs) 06:33, September 4, 2006

RIP Steve Irwin. Such a shocking loss. -- Sarz 05:10, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Um, I'm skeptical. Stingrays don't have 'barbs' and certainly not ones long enough to pierce one's heart, nor strong enough to get through one's ribcage. If I'm not mistaken, stingrays sting via stinging cells in the tail, like a jellyfish. What? Oh, whoops, I was wrong. It's a cartilaginous spine covered in venom. Either way, that couldn't pierce your chest, and both this article and the stingray article appear to -be- vandalized, despite being protected against vandalism at present. Yeah, this has got to be a hoax.
Stingrays can be lethal, obviously. And if we've fallen for this "hoax", then so have CNN. You can't expect us to have all of the correct details exactly as the situation develops, but I personally do think a stingray barb could pierce someone's chest deep enough to cause death. And don't forget that it's venomous ... Cyde Weys 05:17, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
No, nothing impossible about this. Stingray barbs are quite long, and certainly capable of killing. Steve himself would have said that as a piece-to-camera before - possible within hours of this tragedy, too.
A child was killed here (Innisfail) some ~20 years ago, when a stingray jumped into the boat. Definately occours, although it is unusual.Robbak 05:22, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
An interesting article on Stingray "attacks" here[1]220.237.34.36 05:28, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
Article should link to wikipedia article on stingrays. I have seen very big rays at Kelly Tarltons (Auckland, nz) & they are certainly big enough to kill; thing that saves many people is that the barbs don't often hit close to the heart.

Big hoax if CNN and ABC both are on it...Xcfrommars 05:18, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Yep and the AP in the United States. --Woohookitty(meow) 05:18, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
False reports have happened before. It happened with al-Zarqawi several times, I believe. Notice how CNN is still saying "Reports: 'Crocodile Hunter' Irwin dead" and "Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality Monday morning off Port Douglas, according to Australian media." Ambulance officers never confirmed it was Irwin, and even CNN is being cautious. I wouldn't rule out a false report just yet. --Rory096 05:22, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
CNN's story now says that Queensland police have confirmed that it is Irwin and that his family has been notified. —C.Fred (talk) 05:26, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
Ambulance officers would probably not find it their position to confirm or deny such reports, thus sticking to the most elementary facts and leaving the stuff that will lead to huge media crowds to press agents of their service. After all, it's unlikely they don't have other emergencies to attend to, and if not then probably because they're off work and would like to relax. --OliverH 09:08, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

I hear that Yahoo News has a video about this already, apparently with some footage from the Australian news channel that documented it. Can somebody verify this?

Aussie radio seems to have been wavering between confirmed dead and reported dead, but seems to have settled on dead, saying they have confirmation from Queensland Police. Oh my goodness me. What terrible news. Steve was a great Aussie. I've dived on the Great Barrier Reef (and wasn't warned about stingrays). All reports here in Australia say that the injury was to the left side of the chest - the remark about it possibly being the heart can probably be removed. The medical officer at the scene said he suspected there had been a cardiac arrest, but could not confirm that as the cause of death, but that's probably where the talk of physical penetration of the heart started.

A sad day--but he went doing what he loved...

...and who can begrudge.

This is truly a sad day. I'd watched Steve for a number of years. Ironically enough, just two days ago my wife and I caught a re-run, on Animal Planet where he actually talked about his death. He stated he hoped that when it was his time, it would be doing what he loved to do. He also said he hoped it would be gotten on tape. I don't know if that was tongue-in-cheek or not, but it certainly is ironical.

My six year old daughter was a big fan of his and is quite saddened by his passing.

According to the Reuters article, he was instrumental is stopping the Australian gov't from opening up crocodile hunting for wealthy (probably foreign) hunters.

Reuter's story [2]

Self-procliamed animal "rights" activists should keep that in mind. (And if you want to do something useful stop those disgusting "caged" hunts where trapped, drugged lions, buffalo and other dangerous animals are "hunted" by rich cowards!)

PainMan 07:03, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

I am also quite shocked to hear about this. It is sad that such a legend of his field died suddenly while taking the risks he was so commonly associated with. I know this isn't related to the article, but it is sad to hear of such things. Nobleeagle (Talk) 07:12, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
R.I.P. - should have stuck to documenting cuddly koalas... -- the GREAT Gavini 07:22, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
At least he did go doing what he loved, you're all right. The morning UK news spoke to British zoologist Nigel Marven this morning who claimed that people are rarely killed by stingrays or even rarely attacked by them, and they prefer to dart away if threatened. So, was he really attacked? Or did he just happen to dive onto one? Or did he faint from the sting and drown? Michaelritchie200 07:38, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

There wasn't much out there in the animal kingdom that Steve was afraid to show us. He was a fearless man with a heart of gold. Out off all the deadly animals he wrestled and taught us about, who would have thought that it would be a stingray to end his life? My condolences to all Steve's loved ones... May your cause for conservation and animal welfare live on. Rest in peace, Steve.

My sympathies with his family. My mother calls it ironic, but I think it was just as well he died as he lived, and how we will all remember him. 1962 - 2004, rest in peace. Lady BlahDeBlah 10:37, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Half-staffing?

Ok, since I am from the US, I could not register with the Aussie Commonwealth Flag Network, which updates about flag half-staffing. Can anyone confirm if the Aussie flags are going to be half-staffed for Irwin, and if so, for how long? User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 07:24, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

As much as Steve was loved and respected, I wouldn't imagine that flags will be flown half mast tomorrow. Nickuss
That's alright, I wouldn't probably expect anything until Monday or Tuesday (though I know PM Howard gave a statement). User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 07:43, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Heart attack issue

One user is repeatedly reposting that he died of heart failure as a result of the sting. That's probable, given circumstances, but we are not coroners, and those of us who are should not be making such diagnoses. Further, those reports other than that the venom near the heart can possibly kill simply don't exist. Save it for the autopsy, in other words. --Dennis The TIger 07:27, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Why not call this site Crocopedia, pshhh, it doesn't matter, (please, add one of those untagged things here, I just want to see if you will actually do it)

It's not exactly the Stingray's fault

First of all, I would just like to say, Steve's death is a very saddening news, as he has helped animals in so many ways.

However, we must also understand that it is not the stingray's fault, as the rays are probably just following their natural insticts, which is to protect themselves from harm.

Nonetheless, may you rest in peace, Steve Irwin. Bioran23 - To the impossible

the article

In the article, it says that Steve died of a heart puncture, however on the news before it said it was of a lung puncture and poison. can anyone verify this? CattleGirl 09:13, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Tragically ironic and deeply saddening

It's tragically ironic that Steve Irwin, a man that has grappled with thousands of crocodiles, handled the most venomous snakes on the planet with ease and casually interacted with comodo dragons, has been killed by a mere stingray, of all the animals in the world. Taking into account the countless times he has been rumoured killed, it's deeply saddening to learn now that he's actually been pronounced and confirmed dead. RIP Steve Irwin, you have been a great inspiration for all environmentalists and animal-lovers over the world. Your unique superhuman enthusiasm and profound devotion for the world's fauna has earned you the deepest and most sincere respect both from me personally and countless others. You will be missed. Picture size

I suggest that picture in the infobox be resized, possibly to 200px?

I don't think people should be too far into documenting his death yet. The actual cause of death will not be known until after the coroners report. Daim hes gonna be missed on the Australian and world stage. --Ari89 07:52, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

The infobox photo is alright, since if we make it 200px, then it could cause some issues with those who have smaller resolutions. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 08:15, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

In the infobox at the top of the page there is a grammar error, "enviromentalist,tv personality". There should be a space after that comma. Tiny I know but it's driving me insane. Any admin want to fix that? -- Banes 08:56, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

I've fixed it. The article is only semi-protected, and non-admins can still edit if their account wasn't created in the last few days. -- Longhair 08:58, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
Oh ok, thanks. I thought it was v-protected. -- Banes 09:00, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Time of death

Currently the article says that the incident occured in the early afternoon, but the next paragraph says it happened at 11:00 AM local time which by my calculations makes it before noon. Which is it? -Richmeister 09:05, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

The 11am time of death appears correct. News began flowing in Australia early in the afternoon. Allowing for time to contact his family etc, I'd say 11am is close to the mark. -- Longhair 09:07, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
Apparently his family were not in range of normal communication, hiking in Tasmania according to reports. So I doubt that would be the reason. Ansell 09:11, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
