Proposed for deletion
editThis article was proposed for deletion by Mr._No_Funny_Nickname, with the reason given as it "Clearly does not meet the notability guideline as per WP:POLITICIAN". This is true, but the article does meet other notability requirements:
People are likely to be notable if they meet any of the following standards. Failure to meet these criteria is not conclusive proof that a subject should not be included; conversely, meeting one or more does not guarantee that a subject should be included. [...] A person who fails to meet these additional criteria may still be notable under Wikipedia:Notability.
Any biography:
1. The person has received a well-known and significant award or honor, or has been nominated for one several times.
2. The person has made a widely recognized contribution that is part of the enduring historical record in his or her specific field.
The subject of the article satisfies the notability criterion, not for being a notable 'Canadian politician' but for founding disability non-profit organizations such as the Canadian Injured Worker Alliance, as well as for being a national awards recipient of note for advocacy of disability rights. Further, the guidelines go on to say the following individuals are noteworthy:
Politicians:
[...]
3. Just being an elected local official, or an unelected candidate for political office, does not guarantee notability, although such people can still be notable if they meet the primary notability criterion of "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject of the article".
The individual in question, although elected to provincial boards, is not notable for political work but again does meet the primary notability criterion of "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject of the article" for disability activism.
Finally, Wikipedia guidelines for nominating an article for deletion state:
Be aware that some pages should be improved rather than deleted
1. If the article can be fixed through normal editing, then it is not a candidate for AfD.
2. If the article was recently created, please consider allowing the contributors more time to develop the article.
As this is both an article that was recently created and one that is undergoing improvement through normal editing, it should not be deleted.

- Candidates for office do not meet WP:POLITICIAN, examples: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dr. Bob Hilliard, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Adam DeVita Mr. No Funny Nickname (talk) 22:35, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
- Following the examples in your edit contributions history, the basic information of this article should be moved to Ontario New Democratic Party candidates, 2011 Ontario provincial election#Steve Mantis (Thunder Bay-Superior North), maintaining this page so that election info boxes can link to him if he is not elected, or to move the information back to the page in the event that he is elected. In my time here, that seems to be the general consensus on what to do with political candidate pages created during election periods. It should not be deleted, just redirected to Ontario New Democratic Party candidates, 2011 Ontario provincial election#Steve Mantis (Thunder Bay-Superior North). vıdıoman 01:42, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
- Agreed, the information should be moved to Ontario New Democratic Party candidates, 2011 Ontario provincial election#Steve Mantis (Thunder Bay-Superior North). However, this article should still be deleted.Mr. No Funny Nickname (talk) 21:45, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
- Why is deletion preferable over a re-direct? vıdıoman 01:19, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
- There is no reason why this article should be deleted. Steve Mantis meets WP:GNG through media coverage. Nipsonanomhmata (Talk) 01:32, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
- Please see WP:POLITICIAN, "Just being an elected local official, or an unelected candidate for political office, does not guarantee notability". There is no indication that the subject meets notability guidelines as the primary justification for having the article is that he is a candidate. The reason I'm going through the WP:AFD process is that in the past over zealous editors have deleted the re-direct and re-added content to the page, requiring a deletion to resolve. Blanking the page and adding #REDIRECT Ontario New Democratic Party candidates, 2011 Ontario provincial election#Steve Mantis (Thunder Bay-Superior North) would be the ideal solution. Mr. No Funny Nickname (talk) 12:05, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
- Articles can be created for reasons other than the reason we decide to keep them. They can be salvaged. This article can De-emphasize his political aspirations and still meet very basic notability guidelines. And if the re-adding of content to a re-direct page can't be resolved by simply reverting that page and requires going through the deletion process, then so be it. That doesn't mean the article and its edit history have to be deleted right now. If you agree that redirection to the NDP candidates page is "the ideal solution", then why didn't you do that in the first place? When I saw that this article was created, that was the first thing to pop into my head, until I saw how developed the article is and decided to leave it as a general notable person article. vıdıoman 22:40, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
- You can still meet WP:GNG and not meet WP:POLITICIAN as is the case with this article. Nipsonanomhmata (Talk) 13:32, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
- Indeed a number of other prominent people, never elected but running in the same election, meet WP:GNG but not WP:POLITICIAN. For example, Sarah Thomson (publisher), Cathy Crowe, Bernie Faber, etc. Some are less prominent than the subject of discussion, as he is widely known in disability rights circles across Canada, so to be consistent all those other WP:GNG notables would have to be deleted as well.
