editI hope I have not offended anyone but if this person did nothing in life to deserve a page, why now?Stevenscollege (talk) 14:53, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
This just looks like it has been cut and pasted froma website. Mikepuk1 —Preceding comment was added at 14:55, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
If we did not make articles for some of the more important people that have died, immediately after they died, there would be about 2,000 fewer articles on Wikipedia. Star Garnet (talk) 15:30, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
Actually it is quite insensitive. Has Steve Sinott, current (not long-ago) leader of Britain's largest teaching union,(no I'm not a member)done less to deserve it than the legions of American ex sports stars regularly featured? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.242.207.22 (talk) 15:43, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
Education in the United Kingdom takes a huge slice of public revenue, and is a subject which generates huge debate. Sinnott lead the country's biggest teaching union, and was steering the first national strike for over 20 years, an action which affects millions of people. Wikipedia is a collective project, and I would strongly urge any contributor not to make a snap value judgement on the life of another human being. Bear in mind that Sinnott's relatives might visit the site. Bashereyre (talk) 15:57, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
This is completely idiotic, what other NUT President is even listed on Wiki why this one person, the NUT article doesnt even mention any other person except Steve Sinnott, and then only the fact he`s dead. Ill remind everyone this is an encyclopedia not a memorial.Stevenscollege (talk) 16:12, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
- A quick search of Google News for the name reveals a number of articles about him and which mention him. This confirms his notability and so it is appropriate for us to have this article. Adambro (talk) 16:24, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
- Who was the President before him? why doesnt that person have an articleStevenscollege (talk) 16:27, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
- I have no idea and that is irrelevant. Per the notability criteria, Wikipedia:Notability (people), this person is notable therefore there is nothing wrong with having an article about him. Adambro (talk) 16:28, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
- Have you actually read the article, tell me what made this person notable.Stevenscollege (talk) 16:34, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

I think he is probably notable, as per people like Dave Prentis (also a trade union General Secretary). Also, the NUT is the country's largest teaching union, and often in the news. Paul20070 (talk) 11:56, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
Sorry but some comments here are ridiculous. If Jodie Marsh deserves a page here then i'm positive Steve Sinnott does. He worked hard and tirelessly campaigned for education for all. He campaigned to help children and believed that if every child could be educated then it would change their lives. He worked with charities and also for the fair treatment of teachers. To say that him having a page is 'idiotic' is not only hugely 'idiotic' in itself but hugely insenstive to his family, friends and colleagues who knew him as a wonderful man. I only wish i could achieve as much in my lifetime and so should you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.5.241.48 (talk) 19:05, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
DOB conflict
editThere seems to be disagreement over his date of birth. The Times gives it as 2 June 1951, while The Guardian has 24 June 1951. I've gone with The Times for now until the actual date can be verified. Paul20070 (talk) 11:01, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
Absence of other NUT leaders from Wikipedia
editThe only reason other NUT leaders (or Steve Sinnott when he was alive) have not been posted on Wikipedia is that nobody posted anything about them, not because they achieved nothing.
The logic of some of stevescollege's comments would seem to be that if he's not heard of a person or topic, or there's no Wikipedia article about them, then they have no importance - a clearly flawed point of view.
