This seems like a definition by non-essentials, because it doesn't say anything about something that is stochastic. Is stochasticity taken to be a part of the definition of "noise"? - I don't want to work much on the article, but I agree with above comment. Really, the entire article seems to be written from the signal processing perspective, which is unfortunate, the subject is much larger than just signal processing.
- A more physics friendly statement could be:
- Stochastic resonance (SR) is a behavior of non-linear systems in which random (stochastic) fluctuations in the micro state cause deterministic changes in the macro state. This occurs when the non-linear nature of the system amplifies certain (resonant) portions of the fluctuations, while not amplifying other portions of the noise.
A more useful definition would describe SR as a central concept in neuroscience. The brain selectively amplifies useful patterns of activity in an evolutionary way. They are amplified in a stochastic or more simply chaotic fashion, selected by memory and the environment.
