In the semiconductor literature "strained Si" is used somewhat ambiguously to apply to any process which uses strain engineering to effect enhanced device performance. This article reads like a laundry list of these ambiguously defined strained Si applications and is self-contradictory as a consequence. There is a similar process which pushes the atoms together... I don't remember what the process is called but it is used in conjunction with strained silicon. Maybe someone can research that.

Actually, the opposite process is also called strain. It's tensile strain when the atoms are pulled apart and compressive strain when they're pushed together. Tedsanders (talk) 18:48, 21 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
