Dr. Stuart Pimm founded SavingSpecies in 2007 on the belief that there was a need for a new approach to conservation, rooted in science, empowering local conservation efforts, and committed to transparency. Having devoted his life to conservation science, Dr. Pimm was compelled to take action. His vision was simple – he wanted to do something to prevent extinctions.

He felt that science was often being poorly used in making conservation decisions, leading to massive inefficiencies in conservation actions. He was also concerned that local conservation groups, best positioned to solve local problems and engage local communities, were chronically overlooked. Furthermore, he felt strongly that there needed to be a clearer connection between an organization’s funding and its conservation impacts.

SavingSpecies is committed to changing the conservation landscape, working with local conservation organizations to reverse the extinction dynamics of degraded and fragmented landscapes. It focuses on places where the planet’s wealth of biodiversity is in extreme peril, using species distribution maps and extinction models developed by the world’s leading scientists to set conservation priorities.

The organization operates under three guiding principles: scientific due diligence, local action, and continually monitoring of impacts, not just outcomes. Every project is informed by science, starting with satellite imagery and habitat models to evaluate opportunities to connect, protect, and restore habitat for isolated populations of endangered species. Rather than purchasing large tracts of land, SavingSpecies strategically connects isolated habitats with smaller, but highly strategic land acquisitions to allow imprisoned species to move freely again.

In turn, the projects inform the scientific community’s understanding of how to reverse extinctions, providing invaluable insights into how species recolonize reconnected and restored landscapes. SavingSpecies continually monitors habitat regeneration with remote sending technologies, such as satellite imagery and drones, and routinely tracks species repopulation with camera traps and ground surveys. The data collected is used beyond individual project management to advance conservation research.

SavingSpecies firmly believes that partnering with local conservation organizations is the only way to ensure long-term success. As a result, the organization does not own any land. Instead, it provides the resources to promote conservation and community engagement, including advising on science and technology, funding land purchases, mentoring local conservation groups, and providing resource and guidance for monitoring and research.Erinwilligan (talk) 16:32, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
