Actually, I'm one who thinks that this split was a BAD IDEA. The organization doesn't call itself "New SDS", but it calls itself "Students for a Democratic Society". Leader

We very explicitly do respect the need for leadership in a mass social movement. See Who We Are, What We Are Building from the 2007 Convention.

Someone, following from a nomination to delete the Pat Korte wikientry, is attempting to insert the leadership claim into this article. I think it's fair to mention his and Jessica Rapchik's involvement, but claiming they "led" students in refounding actually ignores what even mainstream media says happened. But the sources cited do say that they led the refounding of the organisation. I have not claimed that they then continued to lead the organisation or do so today. You're carrying this over deliberately because you disagreed with my nomination of an article for deletion, which is a bit inappropriate. If the other article doesn't get deleted, I think then would be the appropriate time to change this. Also, "led" is definitively inappropriate as none of the references you cite could ever be interpreted as saying a small group of students was led by anyone. It clearly *included* Jessica Rapchik and Pat Korte, but you can't objectively use the word led. SamuraiDiscoCat (talk) 02:09, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Please assume good faith. I edited this article because I agreed with your suggestion in the AfD for Pat Korte that he and Jessica Rapchik should be mentioned here. The inclusion of the reference to Korte and Rapchik in this article is not dependent on whether Korte's article is kept or deleted so there's no need to delay mentioning them here. I invited you above to suggest alternative wording to "led", and do so again. Please concentrate on improving the article rather than trying to infer non-existent motives on my part. Lists of actions sds has participated in?

I think the current format of this article is quite poor. the 2007 and 2008 sections are just lists of actions that SDS has participated in? Many of these events are minor, and do not describe the new SDS. The article makes it seem as though SDS was a major force behind many of the protests, which they were not. I am not in the SDS, and dont feel like I know enough to rewrite the sections, I'm just throwing my thoughts out there. Smaron (talk) 13:44, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

I have changed the infobox on this article, replacing {{Infobox militant organization}} with {{Infobox Organization}}. While the group may describe themselves as 'militant' in the sense of radical, that template is actually meant to be used for (so-called) terrorist organizations, who use violent means to achieve their ends; as far as I can tell, this does not apply to SDS. Founders

Let's get this thrashed out here while the article is protected. Currently the article says, "A small group of high school and college students reached out to former members of the 'Sixties' SDS...". Here are some quotes from sources in the article about this:

• The New York Times: "Jessica Rapchik, 19, was the S.D.S. co-founder with Mr. Korte..." [1]
• The New Statesman: "A call to relaunch the organization went out in January 2006, organized by high school students Jessica Rapchick and Pat Korte." [2]
• Alternet: "...Korte, an articulate and determined young idealist with a mop of unruly brown hair, got in touch with Haber to share his and Rapchik's vision." [3]

These all identify this small group as consisting of just two named people. Can anyone show any independent reliable sources saying that anyone else was involved at this stage? And if so that their role was as important as Rapchik and Korte's? If no other sources contradict these I don't see why we shouldn't identify these two as the founders. Would anyone like to suggest the best wording to use to do this, as it seems that there is some objection to their being described as leaders? Phil Bridger (talk) 18:00, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Well, nobody seems to be responding to my invitation to suggest a wording, so I'll propose one myself. On the basis of the sources in the article I think we should change:

A small group of high school and college students reached out to former members of the "Sixties" SDS, to re-envision a student movement in the United States.

to:

Two high school students, Jessica Rapchick and Pat Korte, decided to reach out to former members of the "Sixties" SDS, to re-envision a student movement in the United States. Korte did this by contacting Alan Haber.

This seems to fairly reflect what the sources say, so, if there are no objections here, I will make this change when the article is unprotected. If anyone has any objections to this wording then please make them known here rather than just revert any edits that I make. In particular I would point out to any members of the SDS that it doesn't reflect well on you or your organisation if you attempt to impose your point of view without engaging in dialogue. Providence SDS

I would like to know why such an individual issue like the Providence SDS taking on the public transit is in here. Many, if not most, chapters are doing such local issue campaigns, why not include them all at least more generally? Perhaps it could be slightly more general and the statements could be something like, " SDS chapters across the country are participating in 'The Accessible Education Campaign', each chapter targets different issues relevant to their community/campus." A few chapters could be mentioned, and not just the 'big news' events like occupations and such... there are chapters simply doing petitions and such which deserves just as much 'airtime' as occupations. Occupations are much more marginalizing than petitions and other actions, so please take that into consideration. AND PLEASE PLEASE don't just cover happenings at places like New school, NYU, etc.... we know they are progressive/liberal schools (if that's an argument, it's not for here), try and cover more of the gamut ... we have high schools, state schools, private schools, regional chapters, etc, etc. We are all in this together. -Quite a concerned SDSer in the northeast, 25-3-09 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.235.138.54 (talk) 00:49, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Well, we have to follow WP:V and WP:RS, which require verifiability and reliable sources, respectively, and the reality is that the "big news" events meet the criteria more often than petition drives and other actions. If you can add in the other stuff and provide reliable sources for them, then we will gladly welcome them. Dig around and see what you can find, and be bold!
