How does a picture of a random school in New Jersey demonstrate New Jersey suburbs (or a specific NJ suburb)? Threestepsback (talk) 10:35, 19 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

White flight

edit

My recent edit was removed and I was given a message on my talk page of non constructive editing. I found a better reference from NPR for white flight being done by the U.S. government. This is what shaped the American suburbs and cities to what they are today and they are much different than European suburbs and cities or other countries. 136.37.188.43 (talk) 03:52, 1 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

The first paragraph makes absolutely no sense

edit

Let’s take the first sentence: “A suburb is an area within a metropolitan area which often contains most of the area's economic activity”

Firstly, it’s not grammatically clear if the area containing the economic activity is the suburb or the metropolitan area.

Secondly, I doubt the word “most” was meant to be used here, because that would mean that in order to be a suburb it would have to contain >50% of the metro area’s economic activity, so you could only have one suburb per metro area. Either that or the rather vague “area” is not referring to the metro area but rather the area including and surrounding the suburb.

Thirdly, even if you allow it to just mean that it contains it contains higher density of economic activity - and jobs, as mentioned later in the paragraph - …how is that what a suburb is??? My impression is the in the US people’s idea of suburbia is a residential area with lots of single-family detached houses. This paragraph makes it sound like the commercial or business areas.

Fourth, even if this is what it means in the US, I think it should be made more clear that it is a US specific definition (tbh the definitions seem so different in different places that it almost doesn’t make sense for them to be in one article) Transient Being (talk) 06:24, 16 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Just stumbled upon this article and I thought the exact same thing. Needs a rewrite for sure. EucalyptusTreeHugger (talk) 12:04, 16 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
It's the first of many nonsensical paragraphs in this "article." The Sydney CBD is not located in the Western suburbs of Sydney. The separation is exactly what makes the Western suburbs western. Aboctok (talk) 01:15, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
