Sudbury Wolves (disambiguation)
Actually, I just had a look at my Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League... There is currently a franchise known as the "Sudbury Junior Wolves", presumably the farm team of the OHL club. Also, the "Sudbury Cubs" were NOJHL champions 1985, 1987-1991. Further back... A team known just as the "Sudbury Wolves" won the NOJHL in 1969 and 1971. The "Sudbury Cub Wolves" won in 1932, 1933, and 1936. The award in question that they won was the McNamara Trophy, which is the Northern Ontario Junior "A" Crown.
These seem to be a serial franchise... the same team with different names... and if not the exact same team... I imagine their were a short hiatus between these clubs. DMighton 01:24, 18 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
If you look at the stats for Toe Blake: [1], you will see that the NOJHA is the same as the NOJHL and that the Sudbury Cub Wolves dates back to the 1930s. He also played NOHA Senior Hockey... in which they competed for the Allan Cup with the "Sudbury Wolves".
I believe it is possible that the OHL offshoot Wolves may just be that.... an offshoot. Or... vice versa... The NOJHA/L team that resulted after may have been an offshoot of the OHL team... a farm club. What do you think? DMighton 01:42, 18 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
In this article... both the NOJHA/L Cub Wolves and the NOHA Senior League Wolves seem to date back to 1920: [2]. DMighton 01:46, 18 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
An article where the Wolves are a part of a league called the "NBHL"... I'll look into that for sure... but here is the link: [3] DMighton 01:49, 18 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
It appears that the Cub Wolves may have also played in the NBHL -- the Nickel Belt Hockey League... a league that had both a Junior level and senior level. DMighton 01:52, 18 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
An excellent historical article: [4]

Lots to look at for hockey in Sudbury. I have to digest it after the weekend. The Sudbury Cub Wolves won the Memorial Cup in 1935 also. Looks like we will have more to add to the Sudbury Wolves (disambiguation) page. Good work DMighton.

In the meantime, I am still working on the OHL Wolves. Flibirigit 06:21, 18 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Richardson Cup

edit

Yes, they did win the Memorial in 1935... I find it interesting that NOJHL/A teams could compete for the Memorial Cup... seems kinda familiar.... like the Royal Bank Cup... Where you have 10 leagues playing for it... and 4 of them are from Ontario. I wonder is the wolves had to play against the OHA Champion for it...? DMighton 08:18, 18 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Prior to the Memorial Cup becoming a round robin tournament in 1972, it was east vs. west for the title. The Eastern Championship was known as the Richardson Cup. The OHA champion would play the NOJHL champion. The QJHL champion would play the Atlantic Champion. The winners of those two series would meet for the Richardson Cup and the right to compete for the Memorial Cup. Flibirigit 07:54, 19 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hmmm, maybe there should be an article on the Richardson Cup... or a sub-section in the M-Cup article where it states the Eastern winners... and the West winners with their trophy.... just a thought. DMighton 07:59, 19 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Note completed on Memorial Cup. Flibirigit 02:30, 21 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

NOJHL Wolves

edit

What sources do you have that the NOJHL wolves bought out by the OHA Niagara Falls Flyers? The information I have is that the entire Niagara Falls Flyes was transferred intact to Sudbury by the new ownership which bought the team from the Emms Family in 1978. Let me know. Thanks.

The NOJHL Wolves can also be futher explained on the Sudbury Wolves (disambiguation) page, or a new article also be created.Flibirigit 04:30, 27 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I have contacted the NOJHL historian. He has told me that the Wolves and the Greyhounds left the NOJHL in 1972 and joined the OHL. The Sudbury Wolves that now play in the OHL are the SAME team that were in the NOJHL from 1962-1972. The Franchise rights were bought from the Flyers, therefore the Flyers' players were probably bought as well and probably offered a tryout. But... as I said... the OHL Wolves are the same team as the NOJHL Wolves. The Emms sold the "OHL Franchise Spot", which was bought by the Wolves. DMighton 04:56, 27 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for you hard work. Please forward the e-mail to me. "jason . pearson" @ "sympatico . ca" I need more information to make updates to many other articles. Flibirigit 05:35, 27 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

What sources are available that indicate the NOJHL Sudbury Wolves were bought out by the relocated Niagara Flyers team? Flibirigit 04:27, 27 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

No, that is not what I said. The Wolves bought out the Flyers. The NOJHL Wolves and the OHL Wolves are the same team. I think I've told you this before. Anyways, I contacted the historian of the NOJHL, and he said, via e-mail, that the NOJHL folded in 1972 due to the Greyhounds and Wolves moving to the OHL. The Flyers did not relocate, their rights and the rights to an OHL Franchise were bought by the NOJHL Wolves.
The Old Wolves are the same team as the Current Wolves... and probably have more to do with the current wolves than the Emm's Flyers could ever dream of. DMighton 05:22, 27 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
The Greyhounds and the Wolves both played in the NOHA before being accepted into the OHL in 1972.

The precedent set forth with the OHL articles is to follow the OHA/OHL franchise. The foundation dates listed are for OHL teams, but two dates can be listed for the two levels of hockey.
Although the situation with the Wolves is unique. Despite that the Flyers were bought, relocated and renamed, its still the same OHL franchise. It would seem likely that two franchises merged into one, under the common ownership from the NOJHL Wolves.
Do you have any names of owners? They would be important to the articles.
What information does the historian have about the roster from the NOJHL Wolves of 1971-72? It would be interesting to compare it to the rosters from the 1971-72 Flyers and the 1972-73 Wolves.
Either way, the Sudbury Wolves and Sudbury Wolves (disambiguation) articles will need to be updated. Flibirigit 05:19, 27 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well... it seems that they may have been merged. The Flyers' rights were bought out by the NOJHL Wolves... and I would like the WOlves' page to show that.... including their W-L-T records of the Wolves. I don't care how you do it... as long as the information is there and available. Do it the way you want... but the NOJHL/OHL Wolves are the same team... and there needs to be something, somewhere that says that and shows the records I dug up. DMighton 05:32, 27 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I will incorporate everything. There will be many articles that will need to be corrected. Flibirigit 05:43, 27 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've contacted about half of the Tier II leagues so far... and a couple have written back. The NOJHL situation is rather unique. The failure of a couple teams could spell doom for the league. When the Wolves and Greyhounds jumped ship to the OHL... it actually caused the NOJHL to fold for over half a decade -- the Wolves and Hounds were the leagues 2 best teams... and without them... the league felt they could not operate efficiently enough for Tier II Junior "A".
BTW, I do not have roster info or ownership info... I had already milked the guy for decades worth of league standings... I thought I'd hold off on bothering him further until I had some concrete questions for him. DMighton 05:48, 27 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Roster

edit

I have a link for the sudbury wolves roster, but I don't know the format for hockey rosters well enough to imput it myself.

Heres the link, http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/roster.php?step=&sub=&season_id=29&team_id=12, could someone perhaps handle the imput of the roster? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dubbya9 (talkcontribs) 03:18, 8 January 2007 (UTC).Reply

Current Junior team vs. historical senior team

edit

The current OHL junior team should have its own article. The article, as it is now written, is confusing to read as it tries to be the article for the current junior team, and also tries to be an article for the historical teams. The Junior team is not the same team that represented Canada on the international stage in 1938 and 1949. I recommend that a new article, Sudbury Wolves (OHL), be created that is dedicated to the current OHL Sudburry Wolves. This Sudbury Wolves article would then be left for those editors who want to work on building a better article on the historical senior men's teams of the 1930's and 40's, including the world championship teams. Team logo is incorrect, it is just the wolf head with no text around it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 153.2.247.30 (talk) 17:51, 20 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Junior affiliate teams

edit

Recent edits to the Sudbury Wolves by an IP address appear to be an attempt to update the team's affiliates. No edit summary was provided, and the edits broke the infobox template and removed citations. I reverted the edits for now, but it would be nice to have up-to-date information. I think that this Sudbury Star article is relevant, but I do not know if it is the most recent affiliation. If anyone has more information, it will be appreciated.
