editI have just completely rewritten this article, as the previous version lacked any real depth and did not describe the origin nor the development of the term Sultan of Egypt, nor the significance of its re-emergence and subsequent substitution for King of Egypt in the early 20th Century.
The previous version cited the Fatimid Dynasty as using the title sultan, but as far as I am aware they only used the title caliph. As such, I removed the names of the Fatimid caliphs from the list of sultans at the foot of the page. If anyone has any information contrary to this, I would be most grateful to receive it.
