Please check if the flag was first used by the IRB in 1858 or by CnG in 1893. Both can't be first, as the article seems to say. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 19:22, 7 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

The recent merger with Northern Ireland flags issue was inappropriate. This flag's history and significance precedes by a great long time the existence of Northern Ireland, and it should be treated separately. The longer description at the other article should be pared down, and a link added to this article. ---RepublicanJacobiteTheFortyFive16:40, 23 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
"This flag's history and significance precedes by a great long time the existence of Northern Ireland, and it should be treated separately." - Actually this flag's history is highly dubious. This flag as it is and a description of a suppossed flag of the Fianna do not make them both one and the same. 1893 is the date given by the only source for the use of a sunburst flag - and that alone is how far back this flag can be traced. The flag of Fianna is not the same as this one without explicit evidence that it is.
The source also states "The literature attributed a flag to the Fianna which was called either the 'Gal Gréine' or 'Scal Ghréine' - both names which mean 'sunburst'." - is any description of colour or design given that shows this flag is the same or is it purely conjecture or original research by the flags creators? Hayes-McCoy, in attempting to trace the lineage (p156), dates a documented 'Sunburst' flag to a trial in 1867. He links the device to flags introduced by American fenians, possibly based on upper left quadrant of a fenian Buffalo flag of 1866. A sketch by him of the '66 flag seems to be based on descriptions. Unfortunately i can't read it, however how much of his attempts at tracing a lineage are academically supported or reliable or are more than "possibly"? What does the sketch look like and based on what descriptions? From the trial or from the Fianna? Are the flags even the same as the one this article is on about? Just a few questions to hopefully help clarify the history for me and to show whether or not this article should be on about sunburst flags or this exact Sunburst flag if you catch my drift.
