Article deletion
editThis article was recently put up for deletion for the following reasons: irrelevancy, lack of sources and copyright violation. I have removed the deletion request tag. Let me address each of the reasons in turn. The relevancy of the article is in question for reasons unknown, when you consider all the blurbs on Wikipedia that deal with fictional characters. This article is about a large part of the history of Florida that affected real people with mental and physical handicaps and the interest of many enthusiasts of its history after it was closed and left to deteriorate.
Sources are cited where available. If a website with abundant resources closes, nothing can be done about that, which is why this article was created. Most research on Sunland is done through the Florida Archives in Tallahassee, Florida. Unfortunately, this information is not all available online, mostly just the pictures from the scrapbook. That doesn't mean the information doesn't exist, it just can't be researched via the web. One purpose of Wikipedia is to disseminate information not always available elsewhere online. This article fulfills that purpose.
There is no copyright violation on this page to my knowledge. The black and white photo of Sunland is from the Florida Archives which gives permission to use its pictures (this is cited in the information for the picture itself). The other images are my own and I have given the proper permissions for their use and uploaded them myself. If there are any other copyright violations, the person who requested this article deletion needs to cite them so they can be fixed.
In addition, it would have been helpful if the original deletion request had included more details, rather than three vague reasons, one of which is personal opinion (relevancy) and the other not even true to my knowledge (copyright violation). The article is continually updated and edited by myself and others, so more information and sources are added when possible.
Personal Experiences
edit- One such experience crossed my path one late July 2006 night as I was sitting at the traffic light at Blairstone Rd. and Phillips Rd. I was the only car at the intersection and I was waiting at the red light. Then all of a sudden the traffic lights in all four directions started to flicker between the different colors for about 20 seconds, then turned to green. It could have just been a glitch in the system, but with the hospital bearing down on my left, it seemed a little too creepy!
- While the building was being demolished, we drove by and I joked that the ghosts were escaping and coming back with us. As soon as I said that, my two weeks old newborn niece woke from her sleep and started bawling.
- Personal Experience (new author): I visited the site in May shortly before the asbestos removal team came in to strip the facility. A friend and I covered much of the building in the hour or so we were there, taking many pictures. Some of the pictures did show signs of a paranormal presence but the real experience was walking into a room on the third floor and the temperature was noticably different from the rest of the building. I noted that it had become significantly warmer and my companion said it had become colder.
I moved these from the article to the talk section since they do not belong in the article --Napnet 17:57, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
I have a map of Tampa from 1972 and the location is still labeled as "W.T. Edwards Tuberculosis Hospital" just west of Tampa Stadium Morthanley 20:31, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
No references and Original Research
editThis article is extremely hard to read. I at first wanted to place citation needed tags, but after the first twenty unreferenced statement and only one third of the way through the article I realized that placing those citation needed tags is not enough. Just about every statement in this article needs a reference. I was also surprised that there is only one reference in the article and even then that reference no longer exists! Plus each section that discusses paranormal happenings either needs to be verified and backed up with references or they are very much the definition of Original Research.
For example in the first section:
- It is also rumored on various fanmade websites, but not confirmed officially, that the deceased TB patients were incinerated in the basement furnaces. This is quite likely, since due to the contagiousness of the disease, bodies were often burned rather than buried. This would give way to stories of hauntings in later years.
Another example in the Sunland at Tallahassee, the very first sentence:
- The most infamous Sunland location is the one located in Tallahassee.
This sentence can be construed as opinion and not fact. If it is fact, then it needs to be backed up by a reference and also written in a more neutral tone.
Lastly the whole Rumors and hauntings section is based solely (As the title suggests) on rumors. Either references are found to back up everything said in that section and it is rewritten in NPOV or it has to be removed. There is a whole lot that needs to be done to this article to make it readable otherwise it should be deleted. Brothejr (talk) 13:11, 22 September 2008 (UTC)
- I have started to try and clean up the article a bit. So far I've removed the Rumors and Hauntings section due to it be mainly original research among other problems with it. I have also cleaned up the Sunland Center at Tallahassee section by removing a bunch of excess information, cleaned up the writing a bit and added a bunch of ref's to back up the section. Over time I'll continue to work on each section to try and save the article. Brothejr (talk) 16:09, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
- I have removed more content, cleaned up the article a bit, and added a couple more refs. I am happy enough to remove the WP:OR tag, yet some sections which I felt should be kept need more refs to back them up. Brothejr (talk) 12:49, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
Adding new sections on each Sunland Center
editI feel to strengthen this article a bit, there should be a section for each Sunland Center like there are for the Sunland Center at Tallahassee and the A.G. Holly Hospital. That way the reader can go and read about each center all in one article. Brothejr (talk) 12:51, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
Citation troubles
editI messed up the citation in the WT Edwards paragraph but I don't know how to fix it :( could someone help me out? Damaband (talk) 08:29, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
