Fair use rationale for Image:TenYearAFLPatchPhoto.jpg

edit

Image:TenYearAFLPatchPhoto.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Carol Channing didn't appear in Super Bowl halftime iv, she was only on vi

edit

There has been confusion about Carol Channing's appearances on Super Bowl halftime shows. She appeared in Super Bowl VI but is often attributed to appearing in Super Bowl IV. The CBC has a video of the entire game including the complete halftime show. This CBC video is viewable at the link that was added to this topic by another user. I used the link as a source when I removed the mention of Carol Channing in the opening paragraph of the article. My link was denied and my edit was revoked as follows: "removing citation to video per second paragraph of Wikipedia:Verifiability#Copyright and plagiarism - Do not link to any source that violates the copyrights of others per contributors' rights and obligations..." The proof that Carol Channing was not part of Super Bowl iv is found by watching the complete video, which is available at this link which another user posted. Since Carol Channing was not part of Super Bowl iv should I just delete this mention from the opening paragraph without citing a source since the source (which another user posted) has been declared a violation? Thank you for your help. @Zzyzx11:Jackygage (talk) 13:55, 28 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

The link and citation is being removed per that Wikipedia policy because we have no way of knowing whether the person who uploaded the entire game on dailymotion.com does in fact have permission from the National Football League to do so. The NFL has been periodically strict about people reproducing/re-transmitting full games, and has been known periodically to issue take down notices from other sites like YouTube to take down full games.
As for the source of the confusion, the problem is that the NFL's website itself has her listed on http://www.nfl.com/superbowl/history/entertainment so even if you delete the material, there is a good chance that someone else will put it back using the same official source. I'm also finding this article where they actually interviewed Channing herself, it references Super Bowl IV ,and there is a quote from her where she specifically says, "We didn’t even rehearse! It was 1970" (emphasis added). There is also this article and this article -- more reliable sources referencing 1970/Super Bowl IV. So in the long run, either we need some reliable sources that contradict the four I just mentioned, or assume that the video posted dailymotion.com was the one that was altered. As an aside to clarify, the Wikipedia:Verifiability#Copyright and plagiarism policy does not prohibit all videos. For example, we can still post videos from a company's official YouTube channel, such as this video from Pepsi's YouTube channel back in 2014 to promote the Super Bowl. And I find that specific video also relevant to this Super Bowl IV/Carol Channing issue too. Zzyzx11 (talk) 06:44, 29 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate the time you have taken to research this. I understand why the video link needed to be removed from my talk. I have to note that the link to the video still exists on the article as a reference. This was added by another user, I did not add the link to the CBC video posted on dailymotion.com as a reference to the article. I understand the NFL lists Carol Channing as having performed on both Super Bowl IV and Super Bowl VI on their website. I believe this is a mistake. Also, the three other links that you cited were from posts made in 2014, 44 years since Super Bowl IV. I believe they are not remembering clearly due to the passage of time, or are confused. I think confusion has been caused due to the use of roman numerals, specifically the last two: IV for 1970 and VI for 1972. Before the CBC video link is removed from the references in the article, I would ask that you watch it. I believe you would agree with me that the video is complete. I would ask that you at least watch the halftime show and you will see there is no mention of Carol Channing and no performance by her, and I think you will agree that nothing has been edited out. Additionally, If you search for photos of Carol Channing at the Super Bowl online you will only find photos of her performing at the 1972 game. You will find some of these are mislabeled as 1970, but you can tell they are 1972 because of the team playing and the costume Channing is wearing. Of course this could mean there were no photos taken of her at the 1970 game, but I think it helps support that there has been a mistake made. I understand dailymotion.com may not have obtained permission from the National Football League to post their video and that it could at some time be taken down by the NFL and therefore it cannot be used as a source, however, since the NFL is diligent in removing videos, perhaps this particular video is acceptable to them. In any case, I agree with you that since the NFL lists Channing as performing at the 1970 halftime show this misinformation will continue to be put back on this page, and so I will not delete it. I have deleted it for now to see what happens. In any case, we could debate what to interpret from that video until we are blue in the face, but that does not change the fact that we still cannot really cite it. What we really need are better reliable sources (preferably some newspaper articles back then in January 1970 about the Super Bowl) to prove this "misinformation" claim, and then write it per Wikipedia:Neutral point of view#Balance and similar Wikipedia guidelines noting this fact.
