Surround (disambiguation)Surround – I don't think "Surround" has a primary topic and I am unsure why it assumes people are looking for "Surround sound". ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 05:11, 23 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose. I do think most people searching with “surround” are looking for Surround sound. A Google search for “surround” does first return dictionary definitions for “surround”, but we don’t cover plain dictionary definitions. References to “surround sound” follow the dictionary references in the Google results. I could be persuaded otherwise, but I’d have to see comparative page view counts for other likely sought topics when someone is searching with “surround”.—В²C 05:56, 23 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
The relevant Wikipedia policy here is WP:PTM. "Surround sound" is a partial title match, as it is not possible to disambiguate it - the "sound" descriptor is required for it to make sense. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 06:59, 23 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
  • It looks like nothing other than the hatnote links to the disambiguation page in the main article space [1], so we should be able to infer knowledge on reader usage based on the page view statistics of the primary redirect compared to the same statistics for the hatnote destination, like this (all-time monthly). There were months when apparently nobody clicked the hatnote - but this could have been some weird anomaly in 2022 (would need to check the history). There are also months where there's a risk that many people who got there through looking up "surround" clicked the hatnote. The latter seems more common recently. Per numerous discussions at WT:D, I think this is worth investigating, because using the primary topic mechanisms has been known to obfuscate organic reader traffic patterns; once we present a list, the navigation outcomes might be quite different. As long as we put surround sound at the top (MOS:DABCOMMON) it won't really impact the average reader much, nor do we have much reason to believe it will astonish anyone (WP:ASTONISH). Also from experience, we can get decent measurements pretty quickly, so we'd be ready to reevaluate this in just a couple of months time. (Support) --Joy (talk) 10:08, 23 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
  • Support though the sound gets more views[[2]] some of the other uses are only called this. Crouch, Swale (talk) 19:25, 23 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose. I think it's very likely Surround Sound is not just a WP:PTM ("I'm listing to it in surround"), and given that, I'm content to assume it's the primary topic given its significance and the number of articles that use it in their title in this context ([3]). • Support per nomination, Joy and Crouch, Swale. There are three entries listed upon the Surround (disambiguation) page that use the exact main title header "Surround", accompanied by a parenthetical qualifier — Surround (album), Surround (video game) and Surround (horse) — while two other entries are WP:DABMENTION song titles. As for the putative primary redirect — Surround sound — as well as three additional entries under "See also" — Surround channels, Surround sessions and Surround Video — such topics are unlikely to be referenced as simply "Surround". —Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 23:53, 25 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
  • Support per nom and others. ~~ Jessintime (talk) 02:36, 29 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
