Unincorporated communities

edit

We have expanded the list of unincorporated communities beyond the CDPs and a couple of other previously existing entries to include all of the PPLs in the USGS Geographic Names Information System. To my knowledge, Hollyview Forest-Highland Park, Elkin Valley, and North Elkin are the only PPLs not included, as these areas are either totally or almost totally within the corporate limits of Mount Airy or Elkin. These entries should be continuous projects as more users from the Surry area comb the books on local history and geography to provide more in depth descriptions. All contributions to expanding these entries would be most helpful. The information is out there, although it may be difficult to track down. --Naytchrboy 20:47, 3 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Blevins Store & Jenkinstown

edit

Blevins Store and Jenkinstown are not USGS ppls. Blevins Store is a "locale" and Jenkinstown is not listed at all. However, both of these appear on several local maps and their given placements have been stored in the geographic coordinates. --Naytchrboy 20:47, 3 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Geographic Features

edit

A list of the four major rivers is now on the Surry site. What about peaks/summits/mountains? Is there a standard form for listing and describing these features (elevation, location, etc)? Pilot Mountain may be the most famous one in Surry County but it isn't actually the tallest. Any suggestions on what types of information should be included for a list of mountains on this page? --Naytchrboy 20:50, 3 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

You may want to correspond the peaks with the Sauratown Mountains article. I doubt there's any standard. If it's a list you could do a number of things like list the peaks and give their elevations in parentheses and location in italics... anything like that would do. --Triadian 22:04, 3 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Pilot Mountain reaches a height of 2421 ft above sea level, not above the surrounding countryside. It's only about 1400 ft above the surrounding area. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2605:A601:8074:5700:F57E:888D:BDCE:6C3D (talk) 05:10, 30 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
