Should the list of suburbs be at the front or at the end? Although it's like an appendix, isn't it rather important since it defines what the LGA consists of? Enochlau 04:23, 13 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

I moved the list because when it was placed at the front, its length made it look a bit awkward. The boundaries of LGAs are defined, I think, by acts of state parliament and not necessarily match with a set list of suburbs. Even if they do, there's no reason to list them front up. The article on Australia, for example, doesn't start with a list of its states. --Yu Ninjie 09:02, 13 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

2005 Riots

edit

There need to be some discussion of the riots that are taking place (at the time of writing this) in Cronulla and subsequently other areas. However, this needs to be given context and linked to a dedicated wiki-page. A full description does not belong here. Also, it should not be at the beginning as it is not a defining feature of the area - maybe it should go under "culture" (or lack of it...)?

Wait until the riots have "finished". Sutherland doesn't need it just yet. -   Gt 13:17, 13 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
I agree entirely, so why is there a poorly written paragraph in the initial information section just before the contets box? Witty lama 03:05, 14 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Can people who know or care about this LGA please have a look at this message and see if they can please help solve any of the redlinks in the "suburbs" section of this page? (Usually solution is either to add a stub about the suburb / locality in question, or to remove it from the LGA's list). -- All the best, Nickj (t) 04:23, 23 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm fairly sure some of these are fictional, Bangor Heights, Menai Heights and Menai East to name a few. Quolnok 15:40, 4 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Suburb localities

edit

I've noticed many of the smaller "localalities" or "bays" have sprung up as suburbs in the Sutherland Shire Wikipedia articles. For example, Taren Point, Dolan's Bay, Pt Hacking, Lilli Pilli, etc have all shown up as suburbs, when realistically, they are all part of Caringbah, which is the name of the suburb with the postcode. I'm sure the same has been done for many other suburbs (inc Miranda, Menai, etc). Isn't this a little misleading, and in fact a bit of duplication. Supposed "suburbs" like Pt Hacking are in fact quite small and often ill-defined (often confused with Lilli Pilli and Dolans Bay) --Christopher Armstrong 05:52, 12 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Education

edit

I noticed this quote with regard to Caringbah High School:

"...however in comparison to other selective high schools within Sydney its exam results tend to be poor..."

In fact in 2002 the school in question achieved an overall rank of 12 for all schools in New South Wales (rank varies slightly depending on source, the highest i have seen was a rank of 8). Does this warrant the description given? There are many more selective high schools which achieve a lower ranking than selective schools which achieve a higher, though i lack the thorough research required to back up this rebut with some concrete evidence; someone with more background may be able to either correct the article or enlighten me.

Also noted that this particular comment was made by a non-logged in IP with no comment in the edit summary... perhaps evidence of unfounded conjecture? Yoimjamie 02:33, 13 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've put a ‹The template Talkfact is being considered for merging.› [citation needed] next to that sentence. If you think the sentence should be removed or altered based on the information you have, then go ahead and change it. If you're altering it, make sure you reference your sources.--Just James 03:58, 18 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

God's Country

edit

Shouldnt there be some mention of the Shire being refered to as gods country? As it is commonly known in Sydney. Antleredtuna (talk) 13:27, 21 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Insular Peninsula

edit

A Google search and conversations with locals suggests that the term "Insular Peninsula" refers to Sydney's Northern Beaches. This makes sense considering that the Sutherland Shire cannot be substantially considered a peninsula. Allrite (talk) 11:59, 23 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Notable Residents

edit

Is this section necessary here? Nearly every suburb has a notable residents section, and most people on the list on this page would be on a specifics suburb page (Correct me if I'm wrong there though), so I don't see the point.

It also seems like the list here is meant to be a summary of the most notable all up from the shire, but if that's the case, I'm interested in why several people here were considered more notable then others. For example, Angus Young is listed as a notable resident of Kangaroo Point, but not on this list. He would be far more notable then many on this list, especially the one's who don't appear to have articles on Wikipedia.

Just my thoughts though. Anoldtreeok (talk) 06:24, 17 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Few edits I made

edit

So, instead of there just being a section for the Cronulla riots, I've made a section "contemporary Sutherland Shire", which incorporates it. So far, there's not much else besides the riots, so it is in need of expansion.

Another thing I'm thinking of doing is removing the "Overview" section at the top. The Lead Paragraph(s) should be the overview, and other information should be in separate sections throughout the article. I'm thinking some of the information could go into a urban structure section or something similar to follow (or precede) the geography section.

Looking through the history, The majority of edits throughout the last few months were by me, and many that weren't have been reverted, so I'm hoping other people can contribute, so that this page doesn't end up as my view of the shire. I'll try and get a few of these things done myself, but I think if other people get involved more could be done with this article. Anoldtreeok (talk) 05:55, 5 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

New lead photo

edit

I like the new lead photo, you will have to show me how its done. Cheers ***Adam*** 11:45, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

Done using photoshop elements. Tried using professional photoshop, but it wasn't as easy (which would make sense). The first two pictures are your one's I'm pretty sure, good job with them. I just thought the map gave a kind of dull start to the article, so figured a few pictures might brighten it up a bit. I tried to guess what would be the most relevant, whether these are or not is debatable, but glad you like it. Anoldtreeok (talk) 12:03, 6 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
No worries and thanks for the advise. I also think a lot more suburban articles could do with these and maybe one day the Sydney article as well. ***Adam*** 12:08, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
There's a minor discussion going on at the Sydney page about adding a montage, because quite a few have been added recently. I'm probably being a bit too critical towards all the suggestions, even mine. I guess I just can't be pleased. Anoldtreeok (talk) 12:13, 6 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Shirelive Church?

edit

In the 'demographics' section, 'Shirelive Church adherents' are listed as a major 'form of Christianity', along with Catholicism and Anglicanism. As well as this, the citations used for that section link to a page of the census website which states that the page has been removed, and then redirects to the main census page- it would appear that the original pages linked to were the pages on Eastern and Western Sutherland Shire, from the 2001 census. The 2011 census lists the religious affiliation for the area to be, in this order, Catholic, Anglican, no religion, Eastern Orthodox, and then Uniting Church. I feel it would be more appropriate to list that information in the article, and to update the citation to the 2011 census, and to remove the inappropriate 'Shirelive Church' addition. I would do it myself, but I haven't a clue how. 58.172.84.130 (talk) 14:56, 8 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
