Talk:Svetlana

In Cyrillic that name is spelled Cветлана. The letter "в" is translated into the "W" in Latin languages so Svetlana many times is spelled Swetlana.

South Slavic?

edit

The article says "Origin - South Slavic", what's the connection then between the "Region of origin - Russia" and South Slavs(serbs, bulgarians, etc)? I suggest we change it to "East Slavic". Antimirov (talk) 23:47, 3 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

The Old Persian and Old Iranian cognate

edit

Etymologically, It's related to New Persian proper name سپییده (Sepide) which is derived from the Middle Persian Spēdag of Old Iranian *spaita- (white, pure, light). Their common PIE etymon: Pokorny Etymon: 3. k̑uei-, extended kuei-d-, kuei-s-, kuei-t- 'to shine; white' https://lrc.la.utexas.edu/lex/master/1068 X.goodarzie 02:22, 23 December 2016 (UTC)

Light vs Holy

edit

Re: <<The Slavic element Svet means "blessed, holy, bright".>> This statement may be right for some Slavic languages but not in general. There are two different roots, one meaning "light" (e.g. свет/svet in Russian), and the other one meaning "holy" (e.g. свят/svyat in Russian). These two roots may be similar but descend from different PIE roots as well. Etymologically "Svetlana" has nothing to do with the root meaning "holy". 178.46.117.128 (talk) 15:36, 21 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Ban on name section

edit

On 20 September 2020, user Q8x (now indefinitely banned for sockpuppetry) added a potentially interesting section about the Russian onomasticon but neglected to mention how it applies to the name Svetlana. Was Svetlana banned? When, what has changed since, and why? Can someone who knows please remedy this?-----Frans Fowler (talk) 03:30, 26 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
