The founding date of the school...what is it actually? there are conflicting listings. Engineering classes seemed to start in 1843, but students still had to fulfill the liberal arts requirements suggesting it wasn't and independent "school" or "college". In 1856, following a fire that shut down the university for a few years, the scientific/engineering courses were listed with a separate listing of studies. Separate engineering degrees (no requirement for the classics) were announced for the first time in the school course catalogue for the year 1868-69 and classes in mechanical and civil engineering were introduced at that time, with the first one being awarded in 1874. At this point the it was referred to as the engineering department but the first Dean of the department did not get appointed until 1892 (dean of the engineering faculty). So which date corresponds to the creation of the School of Engineering. Does the school itself have a date it choses to use as it's founding? My guess would be 1856 or 1868. Any Pitt engineering students/alumni know? CrazyPaco (talk) 21:03, 15 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
