editSydney Pokorny (1965-2008) passed away on September 1, 2008. She is survived by her mother, Wendy. 68.228.177.27 (talk) 03:21, 2 September 2008 (UTC)Liz Tracey
I've removed the deletion template. As noted above, Sydney Pokorny passed away this week. As the author of the article, I'd hoped to improve the page over time and I'm now feeling regretful that I hadn't, but I'm also still processing her death and need more than a few days to gather the source material and properly re-edit the page. I left a comment here on Thursday, which I've removed myself, asking for an extension because I didn't realize I had the ability to remove the template. If the page must be removed, then I'll work on it independently and submit it again when I feel it's up to standards, but personally I'd like to keep it up if it isn't a problem. I do realize the request was based on quality (my fault) and not on the content of her life or the significance of her achievement, but I do think that should be recognized now at the time of her passing and that the page should stay up for longer than the five-day warning. Further, if anyone would like to edit the page in the meantime and keep it up to standards, it would be a great help and greatly appreciated by a good friend of Sydney's who was not only a friend but who feels her contributions to ACT-UP and her work at Outweek and Artforum, among other good work, are important enough to be recorded and remembered.Trobik (talk)
- Please do - at the moment, the article says nothing about why she's important - "her contributions to ACT-UP and her work at Outweek and Artforum" doesn't quite meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines. The article also has absolutely no references, which (IMO) is a big problem. Be aware also of WP:MEMORIAL. -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 19:39, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
- Sadly, I'm having trouble finding an article on the Women's Caucus on the Wikipedia article on ACT-UP, or an article on the Well Project or the Global Coalition on Women and AIDS, or a Wikipedia article on the physiological differences that make the treatment of women with HIV different from men, or the cultural differences that contribute to the fact that women are contracting HIV and AIDS faster than men globally. I don't mean this to sound bitter, but it seems like the culture Wikipedia doesn't put a lot of notability on the issue at all so I shouldn't be surprised someone editing Wikipedia pages would find someone directly involved in the first public forum on women and AIDS unimportant. I'm well aware of WP:MEMORIAL; thank you. This article was not a memorial on April 10 when it was approved in the Articles for Creation process by a different user who must have found it notable enough. I've admitted in my comment that I had not gathered the citations. I put up the stub in April and then had almost no time to put in the work and I regret it. Sometimes an author's work just isn't on line, and I have no access to the library of magazines she wrote for to add the proper citations. As I said, if the article is deemed to come down, then Wikipedia will always be here. I'll put in the work and resubmit. By the way, thank you for at least taking ten seconds to express your sympathy as you take the time to tell me my friend's life isn't important enough.Trobik (talk) 21:49, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
- Wow - I touched a nerve. I'm terribly sorry. In no way did I mean to tell you that *any* life is unimportant. And as a member of WP:LGBT, I've put in countless hours myself helping to preserve knowledge about the LGBT movement as a whole. My comment was simply meant to mention that I support your efforts to add sources to the article - it was not meant as an insult in any way, and I'm sorry if I came across as callous. -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 21:48, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
- Okay, that's fine. I appreciate the apology and especially the swiftness and sincerity of it. I'm glad you understand my mental state at the time. Tone is hard to read online, as I'm sure you know. You're apology is accepted and I thank you.Trobik (talk) 21:53, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
