IUCN (2010) and FishBase both list this species as Synodontis nigromaculatus. FishBase, in particular, lists S. nigromaculata as a synonym and marks it as a "misspelling of the species' name that must not be used": Synonyms of Synodontis nigromaculatus Boulenger, 1905
