  • Missing from lede:
    • Birthdate and Birth place
    • Supporting reference(s) for Birthdate and Birth place
    • Mention of his association with the Wesleyan Methodist Church
    • Mention of other business associations / business-related investments
    • Mention of property investment(s)
  • Biography
    • Who were his parents?
    • Siblings?
    • What did he do for the first 28 years of his life?
    • When, and where, did he marry Eliza? What do we know about Eliza?
    • Why did he move to Adelaide?
    • What was his brother's name. When did brother come to Adelaide?
    • Can we find anything more about Arthur? (After all, it's not just "anyone" who marries the Premier's daughter - especially then!)
    • The Wallaroo Times (see External links) says his Estate was Sterling £1.25 million. What's the relationship between that and "His will dated 23 May 1883 was sworn at under £493,000."
  • Philanthropy
    • The Burra Mine(s) were an unbelievably lucrative investment making quite a number South Australians incredibly wealthy (e.g. Thomas Elder - I must see what WP has to say about the mines' investors.) Although T.G. made lots of money from property, I expect he made even more money from the mine(s).
  • Waterhouse House
  • Descendants
  • Anything else?

This is a link to a family tree which needs some kind of verification

And here is something else of interest:
New Times - March 2011 (Uniting Church SA)
"Financing a Future
Out of charity, Prince Alfred College (PAC) was born, thanks largely to Thomas Greaves Waterhouse.
A man of strong Methodist faith, Thomas shared the vision of PAC's founders to establish a Methodist school for boys. From vision came action as Thomas invested significant finances . . . "
This article also displays a photo of TGW. The paper is accessible by googling New Times - March 2011 - Uniting Church in Australia (its a pdf pdfpdf)

Google books also has some references which may help. Eddaido (talk) 03:13, 7 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

(Actually, it pre-dates Adobe. No, don't ask - it was a long time ago, but it seems that labels can stick for decades. Pdfpdf (talk) 13:00, 7 September 2013 (UTC))Reply
Right now I'm unusually busy for a Sunday morning, winning back the America's Cup (what are our chances?) but here is the official looking source for his arrival on the Lysander. Eddaido (talk) 21:15, 7 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

House

edit

I know its (relatively) big and impressive but it was not his (or hers). In the absence of any other pictures I don't mind a picture and a note it was built on (presumably a small part of his landholdings) his land by his son but too much is being made of the subject as it stands now - a day or so ago it was about all WP had on him! Now it can have a more balanced mention - almost none. What do you think?

I think you've summarised the situation accurately. But please don't remove it until I've worked out how to keep it on WP. e.g. I suspect a separate page for Arthur would/will be hard to justify, but including on the TW page would not be a stretch, in which case the house could continue to appear here. Further, Waterhouse House points to that section ... Would you mind giving me a couple of weeks to sort things out?; I seem to have too many fingers in too many pies at the moment!

Hey! What's this? Who is correct?

I you are asking me to choose between putting my money on the Adelaide City Council, or this guy, I'd go for the Adelaide City Council.

Some of the artcile's phrasing is still uncomfortable to read.

John Waterhouse the brother, 8 February 1809 — 14 April 1874

edit

If you look here you will see a record of the birth at Conisbrough Yorks. 8 February 1809 of a John Waterhouse who was baptised for Lydia and Thomas Waterhouse and so fits with this record for the younger TGW. It looks as if there was an elder brother William born 5 October 1807.

If you look at this newspaper item (The South Australian Advertiser, Tuesday 2 June 1874) you will see the report of John's (late of Adelaide) death 14 April 1874 in Hooton Roberts (a few miles from Conisbrough) Yorkshire aged 65 years. (OK it says aged 66 it means 66th year look at the burial register) He was buried at Hooton Roberts 16 April 1874 aged 65. A 22-year old Lydia Waterhouse was buried there a couple of years before. Following his death there are newspaper notes of bequests to come from his will to local charities but no detail. There are subsequent reports of a donation to the Hospital which has been taken by the government's treasury (????) and another of £200 to The Adelaide Benevolent and Strangers Friend Society which arrived via TGW (???). Did John leave Adelaide in debt?

Looking at Adelaide newspapers from say 1844 John took a very active part in the business community, petitioning for a corporation for Adelaide, forming a gas light company, forming substantial mining companies etc. It appears he left Adelaide about the end of 1867 and was not reported by those newspapers in any volume until his death in 1874. The England census of 1871 should tell more. Eddaido (talk) 02:34, 8 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Mt Lofty Waterhouses

edit

According to the notes made by the State Library of SA this family descends from TGW or brother because they held items about TGW. The SLSA holds much more than can be easily referred to here. Eddaido (talk) 03:41, 8 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
