Disputed etymology
editWhen I first saw "Taco" listed on Thaddeus as a Dutch form of that name, I was dubious. Then I found this article with several Dutch examples and thought, okay, it checks out. But then curiosity brought me back, and I went to the corresponding Dutch Wikipedia article, nl:Taco (voornaam). And here's what it has to say:
- Taco is een Germaanse voornaam. 'Ta-' is een verkorting van het Germaanse woord thiad of died(e)/diet ('volk') en de uitgang '-co' is een Saksische verkleinvorm.
- (Taco is a Germanic given name. 'Ta-' is a shortening of the Germanic word thiad or died(e)/diet ('people') and the suffix '-co' is a Saxon diminutive.)
So the Dutch Wikipedia doesn't (or at least, Dutch Wikipedians don't) support the claim that it's a Dutch form of Thaddeus. It does give me an idea of a possible source of the error (if error it is): Proto-Germanic theudo- could certainly be confused or conflated with "thad". I don't know about the quality of their citations, so I won't go and copy their etymology here, but I think it needs some attention/investigation. -- Perey (talk) 05:35, 24 October 2021 (UTC)
- All I could find is one unreliable source, so I've removed the claim. Clarityfiend (talk) 00:17, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
