Sorting order

The list of vessels is in some kind of order. Should the list of vessels be in alphabetical order by their name, with prefixes like HMS and USS not considered part of their name? I think so. -- Geo Swan 19:53, 2005 Mar 6 (UTC)

ASTA

I'm tempted to remove the thing about the American Sail Training Association. Any vessel likely to participate in this kind of race is going to be over 30ftLWL, so their definition of a "tall ship" essentially depends on who is sailing it, and applies to more or less any kind of vessel. This is manifestly incorrect and could confuse readers about what a tall ship is. PeteVerdon

Why remove it? Agreed, their definition is really watered down, but it is a fact. They consider it correct, and that other people may find it ludicrous is rather irrelevant, I think. At the very least mentioning their view may help people who only know this ASTA definition to get the wider picture without going "whoa, the ASTA says so-and-so, let's keerect this article!". Trademark

What's the matter with the US Patent & Trademark Office in that they allowed ASTA to register Tall Ships as a trademark? I wish someone would ignore it, get ASTA to sue them, and have the trademark registration voided once and for all. No one should be allowed to declare as a TM or SM, much less register it, a common, generic term as used in its original use. Tall Ships brand vodka? Fine. That'd be okay. Hi DGG, I am a Wiki beginner and put a link to our charity site on this page on 18:20, 27 December 2006 adding to many other similar useful links to other charities in the Tall Ships field. on 19:14, 31 October 2007 Inwind created separate article for list of tall ships and at this time reference to our charity was deleted but many references and links to similar organisations were left in. On putting our link back in a seem to have triggered a response of editors looking for changes such as Jauerback who have never even considered the merits of our link relative to others. This approach seems radom and without effort. Can you give me some guidance on how these issues are properly resolved? Why do you decide to remove only my link and yet at the same time express disquiet about other links? Tall Ship Length Information

Seems like many of the ships listed in the table, especially the Russian/Ukranian ships are listed at their FULL length including the bowsprint, rather than without it, as the table is supposed to include and as many of the other ships are listed. Information on ship length without bowsprint seems to be lacking on many of the ships. The table should updated to included either known full length for all ships (this information seems to be easily found), or length known length without bowsprint ONLY for those ships for which this informations is available.

Where's the USS Constellation?

The USS Constellation would seem to be an obvious candidate for this page, but it's not listed. Anyone know why?John D. Goulden (talk) 02:36, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

Link rot.

I've cleared out almost the entire external links. Aside from the obvious dead links, what remained was a mix of pure spam, links to links, links to galleries, and others that were either too specific to the subject of tall ships or not about it in any way.

I put in edit notes for each removal, rather than doing it en masse. If anyone feels that a particular link should be replaced, please add edit note or discuss here first.

Limit scope to Sail Training International terminology -- trim gallery

Since "tall ship" is a colloquial term, as well as one used by a specific organization, Sail Training International (STI), this article should direct all non-STI usage to Sailing ship. This general content and the content at Windjammer belong there.

Additionally, the Gallery section of this article is just a collection of images, which do not support WP:GALLERY, which says:

A gallery section may be appropriate in some Wikipedia articles if a collection of images can illustrate aspects of a subject that cannot be easily or adequately described by text or individual images. Just as we seek to ensure that the prose of an article is clear, precise and engaging, galleries should be similarly well-crafted. Gallery images must collectively add to the reader's understanding of the subject without causing unbalance to an article or section within an article while avoiding similar or repetitive images, unless a point of contrast or comparison is being made.

I plan to drastically trim the gallery to conform to WP:GALLERY, by illustrating an example of each class of ship, as appropriate.
