As the article stands, it's a wee bit ambiguous as to how long Singh was studying the tabla in India for. It might be better to write something like "At age 16 Singh went to India to study the tabla under..." (no mention of for how long). And then next sentence "Although he originally planned to stay for two years, he came back after only one..."
