I'm suspecting that the tanbūra and krar are the same instrument. Someone had just cited a reference in Zaar which suggests that Zaar spread to Southwest Asia with Ethiopian slaves. This could explain why the tanbūra photo in Grove Dictionary of Music shows something very similar to a krar being played in Iraq.
