I'm settling for representative album covers from each era. Trying to add every one will be just too much, and small thumbnails too little. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 22:15, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

Hopefully not only one per era however? There's plenty of vertical space to the right of the Virgin Years at least. Also, an overview picture to the right of the table of contents would be nice ... I'm thinking alongside the lines of those overview pictures in the occasional "I'm selling my whole TD collection" offers on eBay. --Tropylium 11:52, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
Whatever fits and looks good. I just added a few yesterday to work out the size. An overview pic sounds interesting. The Legend image is crappy. BTW: I put all the album images into Category:Tangerine Dream albums yesterday.
I added Tangram to the Virgin Years. If you look, the top of the album lines up with its entry on the left. We can go with that, or use covers that are visually appealing. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 19:05, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

bootlegs?

Should there be a discography of bootlegs? I know that of at least one called Staatzgrenze West. It came out in 1981(?), had a very rough sound (almost zoviet-france-ish) and was presumably put out entrapaneurly in spite of the communist east german government.Lil'dummy 10:05, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Yes- as a separate article. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 11:00, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
Bootleg listings are commonly placed in their own section at the end of a discography article. --AlexOvShaolin 00:17, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Only if it were short- see List of Pink Floyd ROIOs or The Beatles bootlegs for example. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 00:55, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Bunch of stuff out of order.

When browsing through the albums, and hitting the "next album" link, sometimes it will skip a few albums or some don't even have the previous/next album box.

Just wondering if somebody's up for fixing itMattz1010 11:52, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Can you give us a start? Which ones seem out of order? --Gadget850 ( Ed) 13:02, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
Here's what I spotted:
  • Going forwards
    • After Tangram, the next one is Quichotte, but that redirects to Pergamon, skipping over everything '81-'85
      • No, wait, there's two infoboxes... which is kind of confusing. I say we stick with just Quichotte in the timeline, Pergamon is nothing more than a re-release.
  • Going backwards
    • Logos > WE, skipping Das Mädchen...
    • Hyperborea > Logos, skipping Daydream/Moorland
    • Poland > Logos, skipping Hyperborea and D/M
    • Le Parc > Poland, skipping Heartbreakers
    • Underwater Sunlight > GD, skipping Legend and Pergamon
  • Risky Business not included at all
What is the standard, again? To link only albums? To link only existing pages? I think I've seen "Band X albums chronology" and "Band X singles chronology" separate with some bands; maybe we could do "TD album" vs "TD soundtracks". --Tropylium 13:40, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
I rather forgot about this discussion; this should be fixed now and all the missing albums are filled in from Electronic Meditation through Melrose. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 04:46, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

Yes

Just in case anyone notices the recent addition to this article mentioning the minor detail that Tangerine Dream has a small link to the band Yes, the talk concerning this is located at Talk:Tangerine_Dream#Tangerine_Dream_collaborating_with_Jon_Anderson_of_Yes. --sloth_monkey 07:40, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

Sohoman/Soundmill

I moved these from the archive releases to the live/studio releases as both are considered to be reworked versions. If anyone disagrees, let's discuss it. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 17:35, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

I pondered about this for a while, and I think the crutch is - are they reworked to the point that they are more 2000s than 80s/70s? The TT-based / "Vault" recordings obviously aren't, while with Kyoto/Blue Dawn (or, indeed, Green Desert) the originals are generally not available so they're best interpreted as new material. Sohoman, Soundmill and Antiq Dreams (the 3rd member of the trio, which you seem to have forgot) are more of remixes, usually close to the originals, which is why I didn't put them in the "original albums" category. But yes, it is an iffy question. ---Tropylium 10:20, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
No, wait, it looks Kyoto/Blue Dawn were already moovd in the arkive releases list ... so I don't see much point in keeping Sohoman and Soundmill in a separate place. --Tropylium 12:32, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

I had forgotten about Antique Dreams- hard to keep track sometimes. I knew there were going to be issues about what is/is not an archive. I didn't split it off like that. Here are some thoughts:

  • Fold the archive releases back into the main discography so we don't have an edit war on this.

or

  • Split the Archives into groups:
    • Tangerine Dream Classics Editions: Sohoman, Soundmill Navigator, Antique Dreams
    • Vault series: Rockface, East, Arizona Live, Vault IV
    • Bootleg Box series
    • Bootmoon series

--Gadget850 ( Ed) 12:58, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

I think it is a pity that the archive releases were folded back into the albums section. As I have commented elsewhere, I feel that the albums section is cluttered. I would prefer to see only studio and live full-length (30 minute plus) recordings made by the band here. Many of the Bootleg Box series and Bootmoon series releases are audience recordings, with production and release having little to do with the band beyond being tolerated. On the other hand, I can see a lot of merit in the suggestion of MXVN of folding soundtracks in with the albums section, as these are full length recordings planned for release by the band.

Any thoughts??

EP's

The Studio and Live albums section currently contains a number of EP's.

I wonder if we should move these to the Singles section, and re-title this "Singles and EP's". Any thoughts?

Featured lists like Iron Maiden discography and Dream Theater discography have EPs separate from singles. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 11:04, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for your response. Yes, a separate EP section might be the way to go. The problem these days with the CD format is delineating single from EP from album. TD have their "cupdiscs", which are kind of like EP's, but some are longer than 70's TD albums.

But I will happily have a stab at creating an EP section, if we think this is the way to go.

EP's and Cupdiscs section now created. G4ocr (talk) 13:26, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

I'm a little unclear on the logic behind having these as a separate section. Would it not be easier for someone browsing the discography to just have them all in one list, but with an "EP" note in the same way that there are currently "live" or "studio" notes in the main discography? Having to look in another place seems to make things a little overly-complicated, and also disrupts the chronology of the timeline. Is there a reason these should remain separate? MXVN (talk) 16:33, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

My initial concern was that the albums section was rather cluttered with compilations (now moved) and also EP's. My first suggestion was to put EP's in with singles. Gadget850 pointed out, above, that other discographies have a dedicated EP section, so why not TD too?

Your point about disrupting the chronology is taken. But isn't this also the case with soundtracks, compilations, etc.?

If the consensus is that EP's belong with albums, rather than either with singles or in their own section, then I'm very happy to undo the edit.

What do others think?

What is the criteria for determining EPs? ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 20:42, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
I guess it must be duration, although admittedly the cut off point between EP and album is always going to be a bit arbitrary. One case that prompted me to create the EP section was "Metaphor" - with four tracks and a total duration of 23 minutes it is surely too short to count as an album. Or is it? Then again, Rubycon is only about 34 minutes as I recall. For that matter, what are the criteria for determining singles? Many would say a recording with only two pieces. But then that would make Tangram a single! It's tricky, as the CD medium has really blurred the boundaries. A reasonable working definition might be, a recording of duration more than ten minutes but not exceeding 30 minutes. G4ocr (talk) 08:58, 7 November 2011 (UTC)
The Official UK Charts Company defines a single as containing no more than three different tracks, excluding remixes, and no more than 20 minutes.[1] Anything above that is an album. They no longer list EPs. The only way I see to define these is by the Eastgate description. The only one I cannot find is Das Mädchen auf der Treppe (1997). These are listed as EPs:
  • Choice[2]
  • One Night In Space[3]
  • Flame[4]
  • Das Romantische Opfer[5]
---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 13:08, 7 November 2011 (UTC)
On the contrary, Flame is listed as a full Cupdisc like OTO and PD. I'm moving that, and adding Machu Picchu to the EP section. MXVN (talk) 11:29, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
Agreed. If Eastgate describes a release as an EP, then we can take that as definitive. G4ocr (talk) 22:25, 8 November 2011 (UTC)
"EP" seems to correspond to Eastgate's "mini-cupdisc" category. The "regular cupdiscs" are just shorter albums. --Trɔpʏliʊmblah 17:04, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
Yes. I'm not even going to try to categorize those separately. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 18:04, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
I'm confused as to why One Times One and Purple Diluvial are listed under albums while the other Cupdiscs are not? Is it because they have a long enough running time as to cross a border to album status? Is it that the others were considered "full" as opposed to "mini" cupdiscs? If so, then I understand this (although I think there's an error as I remember Flame being regarded as the third full cupdisc and not a mini), but I then become confused as to why is it necessary to break up the discography so that Sleeping Watches, etcetera, does not appear in the timeline with the other albums, and yet every individual Bootmoon release is. Are not the EPs important enough to be listed along with with the other albums? Or is it just that we haven't yet figured out the best alternate way to list the Bootmoons and other late-release concerts? MXVN (talk) 03:20, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

Organization

I added most of the albums that were missing. I have not added singles, compilations, samplers or videos.

  • I think that singles based on an album should be included in the album article; thus Extracts From "Rubycon" would be listed as a single in the article Rubycon.
  • What of other singles such as Ultima Thule, Das Mädchen auf der Treppe or Daydream - Moorland?
I just put Das Mädchen in the soundtrack section (forgot Daydream, tho). Could UT perhaps be added as the "single to Alpha Centauri"? Recall the recent re-releases that have UT in as bonus tracks, and the melodic similarities in UT pt 1 and the middle of Comas Sola. More could be explained in the album article. --Tropylium
Yes, but: UT part 2 has never been released other than the 7" (one of the few missing in my collection). OK. Since both tracks were relased on the 2004 Arcàngelo release (which is in my collection). --Gadget850 ( Ed) 13:15, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
Added Daydream. --Gadget850 ( Ed)
  • There are unique tracks on samplers such as Ossiach Live, V and others. Do we want to treat these separately or in a single article? done
  • Should there be a separate videography, or keep it here? I'm for keep it here.
  • Compilations: List them all with notes on the contents? Or; just the ones with unique tracks (my preference)?
  • The Tangerine Tree listings need a separate article. done

Soundtracks

I have Der Meteor as as soundtrack, but its not from a film- perhaps an "other" category? done
List the soundtracks never released such as Vision Quest? Perhaps link to the film article and add comments?

--Gadget850 ( Ed)

IMO there's no need to list every single Brandmale or Kneuss... How about just linking TD's IMDB entry? --Tropylium
Good idea. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 12:58, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
IMDB has changed something. Why do they only have Tangerine Dream (II)? --Gadget850 ( Ed) Because Tangerine Dream (I) is a porn star. I know I listed TD as a group with about 67 sound tracks a week or so ago (that's where I got "over 65"). --Gadget850 ( Ed) But, we can see where EF is credited as Tangerine Dream, so this link might work. BTW: Brandmale is credited only to EF.

Compilations

done Need to do the listing for i-BOX. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 14:18, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
I simplified this a bit - If you really want to list exactly what on Tangents, DRC or iBox is remixed, surely their individual articles would be the place for that?
OK --Gadget850 ( Ed)
(And yes, I kno' that "Soundtracks" isn't exactly an era, but it's easier and goes well with the system here.) --Tropylium 11:43, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
Works for me. --Gadget850 ( Ed)
Speaking of these, I have the same question for soundtracks as I do with the EP/singles. Why not just list these in the normal discography with "soundtrack" or "OST" in the appropriate cell? Maybe even a different color text or background could be used (I suppose this could be done with live albums as well, though I'm not sure it'd really be necessary in any of these cases), so that they would be easily differentiated from studio albums, but would still all be visible in one list? As it is, the chronology seems disrupted by having to go to another section entirely to find, for instance, Oasis. MXVN (talk) 16:38, 4 November 2011 (UTC)
Yes, in the case of soundtracks I am very much in agreement. I'd prefer to see these in the same chronological list as other full length studio albums. G4ocr (talk) 00:41, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
I'm not sure why including soundtracks but excluding shorter (but proper) releases is the way to go, but if you guys think that's the way to go, then eh... MXVN (talk) 11:33, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
Speaking of eras within the compilations, I have no idea what "The Anthology Decades" should be labeled as. MXVN (talk) 18:38, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
