Etymology

edit

A couple of references are given in the article that presumably trace the etymology back to a PIE cognate of English "through". Regrettably, I don't have access to the original references to study it further myself. However, it's a wonder to me, especially given the nature of Tarhunz as a hammer-wielding, snake-fighting, thunder god, that his name is not a cognate of thunder/Thor/Taranis. The last form seems especially close to my untrained eye. It's not even mentioned as a discredited hypothesis. Has this really occurred to no-one but me? I assume there's a reason to rule it out but it would be interesting to see a mention of it, given that Perkwunos is already ruled out. — Preceding unsigned comment added by IVaughanC (talkcontribs) 01:49, 27 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
