Usage of article on movie title
editI noticed that his film 赫い髪の女, Akai kami no onna was translated as "Woman with Red Hair" sometimes but others it had the article "The" added. I proceeded to make it uniform by using the article everywhere since this seems to be the most used translation in other sites.
I do note that Sharp didn't use the article in his book. We have various form of translations as well for other titles, "a woman" just "woman" etc
Anyway I added "the" simply because it is the most known one for this title, but I do not know what is the best rationale for translating japanese since they use no articles. If someone wants to chip in that would be great :) Cinemaandpolitics (talk) 09:11, 23 July 2024 (UTC)
- I've now noticed that the cover of the international dvd as shown on imdb as "a woman with red hair" as the title. It could in theory make more sense to go for a softer approach since it arguably reflects how Kumashiro approaches the character. In the end this distinction makes little sense since in Japanese there are no articles and I don't think anybody asked about this to Kumashiro when he was alive.
- So I still think that following imdb and letterboxd, which are maybe the most internationally used movie websites, makes more sense. Cinemaandpolitics (talk) 20:48, 23 July 2024 (UTC)
LTTP64
edit@LTTP64 hello! why did you rename the Jigoku movie in Japanese only? The list of his movies always use an english title as first, it should be the same. I see you are trying to draft an article about it, should follow the same logic in my opinion. Cinemaandpolitics (talk) 21:36, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- The film had multiple English language titles and for the article I was writing for the film I considered it easier to draw the parallel between it and the other two "Jigoku" films than try to parse which was the "correct" English language title. 68.169.177.61 (talk) 21:45, 24 October 2024 (UTC)

- I am not an expert enough to decide how to title a new page. But for the filmography list I think we should go with an english title, since all of them have one first. I doubt that there have ever been official english titles, see my other discussion, so we should just use the most diffused. I am going to rename it and keep the link to the draft of the page.
