Guru Gobind Singh Ji created the dilruba to be a smaller, more portable version of the taus to be carried on horseback-- it follows that the taus must have existed before this. I expanded the page to include the account of the creation of the taus from when a historian conducted an interview with a traditional raagi, hope this clears things up!
