The result of the move request was: moved. There is a clear consensus that Taxi is the common name. (closed by non-admin page mover) Lennart97 (talk) 12:10, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
Taxicab → Taxi – Taxi is probably the most common form compared to taxicab. Taxi is common in non-English speaking countries compared to the current title. Interstellarity (talk) 12:08, 6 July 2021 (UTC)
- opppose While 'taxicab' is definitely not common both 'taxi' and 'cab' are. Sticking to 'taxicab' is best to avoid needing to pick 'taxi' or 'cab' given how interchanagble they are. Blindlynx 13:38, 6 July 2021 (UTC)
- Support per nom. Easily the commonest name. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:36, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
- Support. Ngrams shows that, when used in the relevant sense, "taxi" has a slight advantage over "cab" and a large advantage over "taxicab". "Cab" is also ambiguous between a taxicab and a train cab, whereas "taxi" as a common noun can only refer to a taxicab. Rublov (talk) 13:45, 7 July 2021 (UTC)

- Support per nom. It is most commonly used name of the vehicle as the usage of taxicab were rare and unknown. 36.77.95.94 (talk) 22:58, 8 July 2021 (UTC)

- Support. Before cellular telephones were common, I asked at the supermarket counter for them to call me a taxicab, and I was looked at like I was from the moon. Sure, I will you call you a taxicab, he said, with an odd emphasis on "taxicab". I have never heard the term since. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 07:08, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
Post-move comment
edit- This move means that many categories, notably Category:Taxicabs by country, Category:Taxicab companies, Category:Taxicab drivers, Category:Taxicab vehicles,Category:Works about taxicabs, and all their subcategories need to be moved. 162 etc. (talk) 23:01, 14 July 2021 (UTC)
Not necessarily. SmokeyJoe (talk) 23:02, 14 July 2021 (UTC). Retract that comment. —SmokeyJoe (talk) 00:00, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
- I would expect the categories to use the same common name as the main article. Why "not necessarily?" 162 etc. (talk) 23:15, 14 July 2021 (UTC)
- On 2nd look, yes, I support renaming the subcategories to match the parent article. SmokeyJoe (talk) 23:59, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

- I agree (per WP:C2D), and right after closing the RM I nominated the main Category:Taxicabs at WP:CFDS. I forgot to nominate the subcategories however, but maybe those can be moved uncontroversially once the parent category is moved? If not they'll have to be nominated separately I guess. Police-Taxis and Undercover Taxis
editShould add a section called "Police" where it talks about Undercover Taxis and Police cars repainted with a police livery at the front and a taxi livery at the rear?
Women taxi drivers
editThis article already has a whole lot of images, so I hesitate to add another, but File:The Town Crier, v.12, no.51, Dec. 22, 1917 - DPLA - faa354bbccb444d93d1d37e11c751e3f (page 16).jpg is a 1917 article in a Seattle magazine about Frank Waterhouse's Seattle Taxicab and Transfer Company hiring seven women cab drivers, apparently a first (at least for the U.S.). We have very little in the article about the demographics of cab drivers, quite likely a direction worth some expansion. - Jmabel | Talk 19:38, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
