Proposal to move name to now official name Taurere / Taylor Hill

The often used common name for this article's Auckland hill volcano could perhaps usefully be changed to its official name. I am aware such a change can be controversial (research in NZ Herald archives suggested the name Taylors Hill was recognised by a Taylor descendant in 2005).

The name Taylors Hill is used also in the scientific literature. e.g. geology Lindsay, JM; Leonard, GS; Smid, ER; Hayward, BW (December 2011). "Age of the Auckland Volcanic Field: a review of existing data". New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics. 54 (4): 379–401. doi:10.1080/00288306.2011.595805. and was certainly used for many decades in archaeology (e.g. Records of the Auckland Institute and Museum Vol. 28 (20 December 1991), pp. 33-68. I believe other names not mentioned in the article are also commonly used such as Mt Taylor (NZ Herald) and the Taylors Hill Reserve name has been used for the hill as well since the 1960's at least.

However moving to the official name NZ Gazetter would resolve the following issues:

1. The article's common name should really have been Taylors Hill (Auckland) from when first changed from Taylor′s Hill (has been used in print locally) soon after creation in 2010
2. The name Taurere is used enough that it should be recognisable
3. For NZ placename's at least the article name of form Name1 / Name2 is accepted in Wikipedia
4. There is geographical and other ambiguity and while the name comes from a prominent early European settler, the name would not be forgotten if renamed to Taurere / Taylor Hill
   • There are Taylors Hill in Southland, NZ, suburb of Melbourne, Ireland etc so why should the article retain its name on a first come first served basis
   • Taylor Hill its historic NZ Gazetter name before 2014 will always require disambiguation so a move to the this name is not reasonable
5. Te Taurere (or Taurere) is always used for the Pā on the site, not just Tainui iwi, as the story of the name and its associations were also important in early local European settlement.
6. Allow with one reference an update to its official map height of 57m (why I identified issue)

I have noted that just like this name issue passed me by until now, it has passed by contributors far more distinguished than myself, as is often the case with a common name for an article associated with a feature in major population centre ChaseKiwi (talk) 19:38, 17 March 2024 (UTC)

@ChaseKiwi: I agree - a survey of what names are used in recent sources was extremely inconsistent, with no single preferred form (e.g. Taylors Hill, Taurere/Taylors Hill, Taurere/Taylor Hill, Mt Taylor, 'Taylor Hill, Taurere'). "Taurere / Taylor Hill" is a better option as this is a natural disambiguation from other places named Taylor Hill/Taylors Hill. --Prosperosity (talk) 00:47, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
