computer modelling

edit

I heard that the problem with the computer modelling was not modelling waves coming from different angles... is this correct? or does anyone know any more information about the failure of the design. 86.139.140.243 (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 16:56, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

:As far as the initial hull failure was concerned I heard that faulty computer modelling failed to take any account at all of the tendency for sandwich composites to suffer sudden crumpling failure under what engineers call 'edgewise loads'. (A basic understanding of this can be gained by taking an ordinary aluminium drinks can gently in both hands & then try progressively to bend it - at first it's rigid but then as soon as a kink develops all rigidity is lost & the can collapses.) The working environment in which such racing yachts are developed can be quite pressured. The error was great enough that a person with lots of practical experience might've noticed during construction that something didn't look right. Any such persons were though apparently too busy with other tasks, so it seems the computer was trusted without benefit of empirical review. There are many fascinating lessons to be learned from the failures as well as the successes of this project - but I think it would always have been difficult to find adequate citations for a wikipedia article, the people involved just wanted to move on... Btw coming back to the point above about 'waves coming from different angles': that sounds to me like a version of some widely heard gossip provoked because unlike conventional catamarans TP didn't have a bow spreader beam. Some (unqualified) sceptics imagined that made the bows vulnerable to side loads, however compare with successful trimarans like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banque_Populaire_V to see this needn't be so. The purpose of a bow spreader beam on other cats is to brace the rigging, TP's mast configuration made that component redundant. So it was a great irony that many (unqualified) pundits had previously speculated upon the perceived weakness of the bows & then were proved right but for the wrong reason! 86.159.122.236 (talk) 02:56, 26 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

It's a pity the article is still without any drawings or photos since the design was quite radical http://www.aeroyacht.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Team_Philips.jpg 86.148.15.250 (talk) 15:11, 9 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
