Before I started the article I considered carefully WP:GNG and WP:BIO1E. I am confident that my assessment that he meets notability criteria and that this would survive WP:AFD is correct. I find the essay WP:NOTBLP1E helpful in these kinds of scenarios, even if it is slightly missing the mark with him not being living, but the principles and logic apply.
